Great Sleeper, but Climb Out the Crib! Help!

Hello,
My son is 28 month old now. He has been a great sleeper since he was 4 month old. But recently, he keeps climbing out the crib. I need some advise from all moms who have similar experience. He is not crying for help, just out for fun and under potty training. I am not sure if potty training is an issue here but just want to state his current status. I appreciate your advise and any recommendation you may have to me.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First, thank you for all your inputs and recommendation. Yeah, we transferred little Ian to a toddler bed. He is very excited about getting on and off for the first few days. Now, he is getting used to it. Thanks everyone and I am sure this is a big step for him and me.

My twins did the same thing! As other people have said, I think it is time for a toddler bed. My boys have 4 in 1 convertible cribs. They are to the toddle bed stage now but still aren't quite ready for the full size mattresses. They will be 3 in November. My boys were like little monkeys, climbing all over the place. Good luck!

It's time for a big boy bed! You'll have to work with him on staying in it, but he'll catch on-just use a bedrail. He could get hurt if he continues staying in the crib because he may fall. My kids were both in big beds by 18mos.
Blessings,
E.

You should check with your pediatrician. But it sounds like your little guy is ready to explore the world. Perhaps you can move him to a big boy bed. Our pediatrician suggested moving our children out of their cribs by 18 months. We put a safety gate on the room door and let them have at it. When they got tired they went to sleep. It started out on the floor. Soon they got the hang of the liberty and climbed back into bed once they finished "exploring". You may want to ensure all toys and accessible items are safe as well. Good luck!

My kiddo was also climbing out of the crib so I went and got him a toddler bed to avoid him seriously hurting himself. He's only 26 months though. They were $99 at babies r us for the one I wanted. So far it's been okay. The first night he was a little out of sorts with his new found freedom, but since then, he's stayed put knowing it's his little bed.

Usually kids move to a "big kid" bed by age 2 so it sounds to me like he's ready. Climbing out of the crib is a definite sign. My daughter has been in a big girl bed since 16months because she started climbing. Kids die every year from climbing out of their crib and breaking their neck/back so you want to prevent that behavior and get him a big boy bed.

Good luck!

Yes, I agree...its time for a toddler bed! Although, if he is potty-training, I wouldn't put a gate up to keep him in his room. What if he wakes up and has to go potty? We keep the door shut to my daughter's room and she stays put. Why, I don't know because she can open and close doors and is always trying to find ways to avoid going to bed, but she won't even come out of her room in the mornings until I come in to get her! LOL! Since we put her in a toddler bed (we just converted the crib), she does get out and play in her room before going to sleep, but she eventually gets in bed to go to sleep and there is nothing in her room she can get hurt on!

Good luck!

sounds like he needs a big boy bed. I have a 19 month old who is still in a crib, but he shows absolutely no interest in climbing out... YET. :)

Time for a toddler bed! You'll likely need a baby gate at his bedroom door though. Hopefully you can find one he can't climb. Though I have one friend who just stacked 2 in the doorway. I have another friend who put one of those doorknob safety covers on the inside knob of her daughter's bedroom door. It does the trick!

My daughter did the same thing so we went the next day and got a toddler bed...we made a huge deal about and let her pick out the bedding and had all the realtives come over and see her big girl bed. You may want to get the door knob covers now and put one on the inside of the door so your child cant get out w/out you knowing ...I still have one on my 3 1/2 olds door. Its a life saver..shes good about not getting into stuff but you just never know. You may also want to put up as many toys as poss. in the closet as you can too....leave out the ones you dont mind if they play with so if they do get out of bed they wont get hurt on other stuff. I put a nightlight in her room and she loves her bed now...I tell her to yell mommy if she needs to get out to go potty and I'll hear her on her moniter and she never gets out of bed until I get there...I think Im prob. pretty lucky for that. Well good luck!

My pediatrician mentioned to me that when he started to climb out or attempt to climb out of the crib, it was time for a bed.
Mainly, I'm sure, due to the potential for accidents.

Thanks

Time for a toddler bed before he gets hurt. My son broke his collar bone jumping out of his crib. Don't wait too long.
