Replacing our pretty basic point and shoot digital camera.....any suggestions for a basic or compact consumer SLR digital camera that takes amazing pics? Maybe 10 megapixels or better...I'm not a pro so something that is easy to use but has dummy proof settings. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Nikon P100... I shot professionally for a while and this is a great compact digital SLR. Many working options including manual options. Also has a pull out screen so you can shoot at odd angles and still see if you're actually getting the shot. About $350-400. I love mine!

Ooh! And you can also take video...

You have to decide if the purpose you would like the camera for. Point & Shoot cameras are nice because they are pocket sized. I use a DSLR because I shoot professionally, however, I find it is not ideal to carry the camera around for a trip to Disneyland because I get to carry the camera around my neck for 10 hours! It is heavy! I do it, but because I am used to the speed of the camera and used to shooting manually.

As well, my daughter purchased a Canon Rebel because she was going out of the country. Well, we decided since she would be zip-lining and bungy-jumping, we thought a longer lens would be ideal, which it was. She was about $1,000.00 in at this point. Well, she came home and tried to use the camera with friends and discovered, that is not the lens for photographing a night out. So she now has to purchase a new lens, which will cost another $300 - $500.

My point, it gets expensive so decide if this is in fact what you need.

I just posted a few days about replacing or repairing my DSLR. There were some great suggestions for cameras. I have an Olympus and decided to stay with Olympus only getting the pieces I need to replace what was broken. I like my camera but like all of them it has it's idiocyncracies. It does seem there are some nice cameras out there from Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Olympus. Maybe check their individual websites to see what education is offered about using their products as well to help you decide. Honestly, I don't know if I'd go with Olympus if I could start fresh, but it's not a bad choice and I've been happy with it except for the automatic focus in low light. I've recently learned about a work around for that though (putting it in manual focus mode). The newer model may not have that issue though.
