Gray Paint All over Beige Carpet

I need your help and suggestions ladies. I was painting my son's room yesterday afternoon with indoor latex flat paint in a gray color (think Dallas Cowboys gray) and I fell off of the 8 foot ladder onto my back and about a third of a can of paint went everywhere all over the room. I was able to get the big spots off the top lifted out of the carpet but there are several smaller spots and stains and its a mess. I ran out and rented a carpet cleaner, I blotted and poured water...what more can I do? I would really like to save the carpet as we just bought the house and are trying to save some money. Any help??? Please! I am sure some spots are dried up by now. Has anyone had any luck with this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for all the wonderful suggestions. I talked it over with my hubby who was not a happy camper to say the least and we have decided to tear out the carpet and stain the concrete which is what we had planned to do eventually anyway (just not so soon). Our son suffers from allergies so it is probably best to not have carpet anyways. Thank you ladies so much. I love having mamasource to turn to and really appreciate everyones suggestions!

this will take some time, but use a plain razor blade to cut the tip of the carpet and goof off for the rest. Just rub it in w/ a white cloth.

It works, but it takes time

best of luck to you,

My husband is a dry cleaner,so I asked him about this. He recommended e-mailing the International Fabric Institute and asking them what to do (http://www.ifi.org/). They have tried practically everything when it comes to stain removal, and are the company that dry cleaners go to when hung up on a stain.

Hope you find what you need!

We spilled orange paint all over our beige carpet once.. What we did was soaked the stain in steaming hot water and rented a carpet cleaner from Home Depot... Soak it for about 20 minutes and then use a steam cleaner and suck it up. My husband used to work for a carpet cleaning business and claims that nothing takes stains out better than hot water....

There is a product that I have used to get paint out and it works! It is natural and won't poison anyone around, including the kids! The only way to get it is if you are a member of their website, but it REALLY works.

I hope you didn't get hurt when you fell! That's scary!

OMG A., I sure hope you are alright. It just goes to show how tough our moms are out there!! I don't have any suggestions, but wanted to mention that something was probably telling you something about painting your sons room after the Cowboy colors. That's a no-no:) Try Texans Blue or Red;) I am only kidding! But, seriously you need to be careful cause your boys need their momma in one piece!

I work with this company that has a really awesome product that I am sure will take the stains right on out...It's natural, no chemicals or harsh abrasives, the product has a 60 day money back guarantee. You do have to have a membership to be able to get the products, but all of the products work really great. Contact me personally for more info, I would be glad to help you, as I recently have had a similar situation! ____@____.com THANKS S.

There is a product called 'Oops' that works pretty well. If you are unable to get the paint up and you have carpet in the closet you might be able to cut what you need from the closet. Put the carpet with the paint in the closet and the carpet that was in the closet, you can put that in the bedroom and that way it won't show. Good luck

Try AWESOME in a bottle you can get it at Dollar Tree or Family Dollar. I use it on my paint clothes and the paint comes out. I use it on my carpet for everything--including pet stains, and oil. Good luck

I don't know about removing the paint but check with local auto dealerships about matching the color of your carpet with carpet paint. My husband works for an auto dealer and we once spilled big red in my car and it stained the carpet very badly. He took it to the dealership and they "painted" the carpet and you could not tell the stain was ever there.

Hi A.. It may be too late. Anything I have heard is use cool water and blot it and then use dishwashing detergent. God luck.

Hope your back is okay!
What I've used in the past is a product from Melaleuca.com
It's called Sol-u-Mel. It's completely safe to have around your kids, and doesn't stink to high Heaven like goof off and paint thinner do. It's pricey though. If you're not a "preferred customer" (that's a whole other conversation)then you'd pay $13 plus $1.50 for the spray bottle. It's 4oz of concentrated cleaner/solvent. Of all their products, this is one of my favorite. A friend came over and did wall murals in my kids' room - a few accidental paint drops/spills (greens, blues, purples on a beige carpet). I sprayed on the diluted stuff, and rubbed with an old wash rag and most of it came up right away. The green blotches needed some more attention, so I sprayed some more (diluted) and let it sit then rubbed -- can't tell where it was anymore.

I remember seeing a solvent at one of the paint stores (actual paint store, not Home Depot or Lowe's) that removes dried latex paint. I made a mental note of this because the previous owners of our house dripped porch paint on the bricks... Haven't used it though. And I'm not sure how it will work on carpet... Depending on the carpet's materials or dyes, the solvent might discolor. Test it out on an hidden area first. Also, be careful about the fumes.

I do not know how you're going to get the paint out of your carpet, but a suggestion for the future - next time you're painting, put something down over the carpet, so that when accidents happen, while you may loose some paint, you're not having to buy a new room of carpet!

You have had some very good advice, I may even try some on clothing. But anyway, when we have carpet installed we save any left over (if any left over)that way if something like that happens a carpet installer can cut out the bad spot and plug in the extra carpet.
But is the other stuff works do it first. Another suggestion is to store left over carpet scraps in the dark so the color will stay the same.
I have a commerical building that we stained the concret floor and everyone that comes in always says how beautiful it is. We stained the floor so we would not have to keep replacing carpet as the years go by.
Good Luck.

Hi! We did the same thing with BRIGHT PINK paint on beige carpet. The carpet cleaning company came out. They taught us a great trick! LIGHTER FLUID! It takes it out. No greasy spot afterwards, no smell, we even went around the house and took up old dry spots in this house my daughter bought! It works! The old fashioned lighter fluid that you used to fill up cigarette lighters with. We bought our cans at a gas station. Good luck!

Incase you change your mind lighter fluid gets paint out. It causes it to lose up from the fabric fibers and peel right up. I feel so bad for you knowing what a bad day and needless to say I was most worried if you hurt your back. Since your son has allergies regular floor will probally be really nice then you can just buy an area rug. They have such neat ones for kids room. Sounds like your going football if so they have area rugs that look like the field and they also have the Dallas Cowboys area rugs. When my kids were small the boys had a rug that was a car track they loved it and played with their cars.

Sol-U-Mel by Melaleuca works great at getting just about anything off of any surface. When I got my bottle, I used it on a paint spot that was 2 years old in my son's bedroom. Professional carpet cleaners couldn't get the spot out of the carpet, but the Sol-U-Mel did the trick. Go to www.melaleuca.com to see if there are any preferred customers in your area that you can get a bottle from. If not, you should be able to order it from the website or call 1-800-282-3000. I have used it to get crayon and permanent marker off my table too. It's a great product and it's non-toxic.

Well if it doesn't all come out , another option you could do is pull it all up and just paint the concrete floor. We have done that to both of our kids room with concrete epoxy paint. They love it and so do we, just put down a throw rug and it is easy cleanup if you spill something on it.

There is some stuff that is sold at Lowe's and Home Depot. I think it starts with an L, but I am not sure. It is used to take out stains and urine spots. I don't know about getting paint out. I have actually used Magic Erasers on portions of my carpet and it has got out stains, but I don't know about paint!

I found this link on the internet. Good luck!
