Hello,

I am hoping some one out there can help me out. When we moved into this house the grass was beautiful. We have had very hot weather lately and my grass is starting to look really dry. Any tips on keeping it looking good?

Thank you

water it... But beware... If you water you must mow. lol

Our grass looks nice and green in the spring and fall... But in this heat that we are having now we also have a brown crispy look to the lawn... It does come back when it gets cooler and rains...

Talk to your local garden center or extention office about when the right times to fertalize for your area is... That will allow your grass to last longer thru the heat...

Hot, dry weather won't killl an established lawn, it will just send it into dormancy. If water doesn't become scarce in your area during the summer, you can water regularly to keep it green. Frequent, shallow waterings are not good to establish deep root growth, and use water less efficiently. Once a week, water deeply, morning or evening, just enough to fill a tuna can placed under the sprinkler.

Check all your sprinkler to make sure that they are getting all of the grass and that they are working correctly. Then see how long you are watering. You should water in the early morning hours (If you have automatic sprinkler around 5:00 is good) I would suggest that you water 20 in each section then I would have it water 20 minutes again about 1 hour later. I have my sprinklers set up for 20 mins for each section at 5:00am and then again at 6:45 for 20 min again for each section. My lawn is very green and nice. I also water every other day. Some people might think that it is to much but oh well I have the prettiest lawn on the block.
Then next suggestion is you may have grubs. When it gets really hot then the grubs come and eat you root of the grass making it go brown in spots. I would sugest going to home dpeot and you can get the Grub stuff to put on your lawn or you can call Scott lawn or any company the fertilizes lawns. It is so worth the cost. It is the best thing that I have done for the last 3 years and my lawn is the best it has ever looked!!!!

Along with all the other info, dont forget that you need to airate the lawn sometimes. You can rent machines that pull out plugs. This allows more water and air down to the roots.

Dressing it with composted manure would do wonders for it, or when you mow, mow often enough - maybe twice a week, so that you dont need to bag it. let the tiny clippings go directly back on the lawn and it will mulch it and feed it at the same time.

Most likely - you truest need right now is to increase water.

Make sure you leave the grass clippings in the lawn - that is what we do and we have an amazing lawn. We actually don't ever add additional fertilizer. It is easy and saves the hassles of having to dump out the grass clippings. When you leave grass clippings in the lawn, they help hold in moisture and add nitrogen back into the lawn. A lot of lawns get weedy b/c they lack nitrogen - so your grass clippings are a free source of fertilizer that many people will buy at the store.

Also, another great (and lazy) thing we do is we DO NOT rake our leaves - we used the lawnmower and mulch them into the lawn and that provides additional fertilizer throughout the fall and winter. Again free. I hope that helps.

Good luck, S.

What kind of grass is it? We have St. Augustine which grows like wildfire. We just threw some fertilizer down on it and it's starting to come to life with that and lots of water. Also if you have completely dead patches you can always buy a small palate of grass (ours was like 6 bucks at home depot) and insert "plugs" into the ground. Good Luck!

water frequently. At least 4 times per week. Water in the evening or early morning.

Get a product called Revive. It really helps breath some life in your grass. Also, it sounds like you might have to water more or at a different time of day. Try to water just before you go to bed or very early in the morning so you grass has time to absorb the water before the heat of the day hits.

Good luck!

Try ProLawn Turf Food, it can be found at Ace stores. It is great for greening up yards quick. Apply it every two weeks. I would also get Revive granules (I don't think the spray works) to help your lawn retain water. You also need to be carful of insect infestation during periods of hot, dry weather. If you have a lot of yellowing of grass you probably have bugs chomping away. An insecticide like Tetrycide will help.

The ProLawn Turf food is what saved our yard from turning into a disaster. It is a natural fertilizer (chicken poop) and when used with Revive I think it would really help your lawn.

Water, water, water. We live in semi-arid conditions in most of Colorado. Even the breeze is drying! If you don't have a sprinkler system for your yard, consider investing in one as soon as you can. It will save you money in the long run. Your sprinklers, properly set, will water your yard more efficiently than you can do by hand or by pulling the hose around. We have our system on a timer, and set ours to water in the night, so the poor grass has more of a chance to soak it in.

We got this book from Jerry Baker about lawns and he had homemade concoctions that save your grass and get it looking beautiful. Just get it from the library and we put coke, beer, and tobacco mixed up in water on it and it make ours look great without chemicals and pretty cheaply. He has all kinds of recipes for different problems.good luck
