What about have them interview their grandparents? Then turn the interview questions into a scrap book page(s).

Are the grandparents coming in to the classroom? The Hallmark holiday was on the 12th of this month I thought...

What about making picture frames that they can put a picture of them with their grandparents in?

Have them write a biography of their grandparent. When the grandparents visit, they can ask them questions and write down the answers. Then the next day, they can start making a rough draft from that. It is part of the 5th grade curriculum to experience different genres of writing and it will make a nice keepsake.

One of the favorite assignments was to interview a grandparent or family friend. They had a list of questions that they had to ask, but could ask one or two other questions if they so chose.
The questions were on the lines of:
What was your elementary school like?
How many kids were in your class?
Who was your best friend and why?
Did you walk to school? Or How did you get to school?
What did you do when you weren't in school?
How much did it cost to go to the movies? Did you get to go?

Questions like that. It was a really fun project. The grandparents could reminisce and the kids soaked it all up!
They've both done these right into high school as well - for History and English projects. As they get older, the questions get more involved and intense. It's cool to watch them interact.

At the elementary level they created a small paper book. At the high school level they created scrap books... It's all fun!!
YMMV

I like the idea of an interview. Esp if the kids can have similar/same questions and compare/contrast eachother's grandparents. (age, number of grandkids, etc....where they were when such & such event happened - like my mom remembers where she was when she heard Kennedy was shot).

Even having kids do a Venn Diagram comparing/contrasting grandparents (their granddad vs another kiddos granddad -OR- have each student compare/contrast grandMA & grandPA).... having those on the bulletin board next to some scrapbook page interviews sounds cool.
