Grandma and Holistic Dr

My mom has been driving 2 hrs each way to visit a holistic dr. He sounds interesting enough, he's a chiro basically. She is super super excited about him. she found out he holds "informational nutrition" meeting once a month and offers a one time discount chiro exam/visit if you attend this 2 hr meeting. She is obese and could definatley used to hear him talk about eating healthy. While I hate to see how much money she is spending on chiro adjustments that would probably not be necessary if she lost 100lbs, this guy at the moment is motivating her.
My daughter 6 yo walks on her toes but only on the left side. Not exactly her toe but not heel first the way you normally would. She is under a surgeons care, but he has told us that surgury will correct it when she is a teen an done growing. In the mean time he has agreed that any stretching, plysical therapy, chiro etc etc that we want to do wouldn't hurt. She has had 3 visits with a ped chiro and i'll ask another question about that later.
My big question is would you take a young kid to this meeting and have an adjustment, 2 hrs away which means you don't get home until 11pm. I"m torn, my mom would be so happy, my hubby probably wouldn't like it since he thinks my mom is a hypocondric, which she sort of is.

So What Happened?

I'm looking at is as DD can color or what ever during the meeting, and put pj's on for the ride back home. Mom will pay the reduced rate for DD and I to be adjusted ( i have TMJ and have been thinking about trying a chiro). It does sound weird to me but i can't think of why it would be a bad idea other than it wastes time and my mom's money. Oh and this would be a one time thing, I wouldnt' continue to go to him or have him treat my daughter. It"s more to humor mom and see what chirophractic care is all about.

I use to work for a Chiropractor it can only help your DD. I took my youngest daughter the day she came home from the hospital and had her adjusted. They don't do the typical adjustment on smaller kids if you have a good Chiropractor they should know what they are doing and she will be fine. Wanting to be healthy is a good thing..

Don't do it if your husband doesn't agree.

You and hubby need to be in agreement on this. It is your child's health and that is something that needs to be decided together. GL

I think seeing a chiro or physical therapist is ideal for your daughter but not 2 hours away. I have no doubt there has to be someone closer.

No, I would not.

If you want to go for yourself, then you should go. Maybe check it out first before bringing your daughter?

Find a pediatric chiropractor close to home. You have no reason to drive two hours away for a doctor for your daughter when you can keep one close to home and not lose so much time.

I also wouldn't bother with this "meeting" especially if you have to pay for it. What your mother should do is meet with a nutritionist that her insurance company will pay for that is close to home and can monitor her closely and also encourage your mother to get in some light exercise. A "meeting" won't teach your mother how to eat to live rather than living to eat.

I don't know... if he's worth it then maybe it would be a good thing. But driving two hours and spending all that time doesn't sound like it's worth the discount. If he's 100 times better than a chiropractor nearer, then maybe it's worth it. You don't have to humor your mom to support her. I have a chiropractor that I absolutely love. He's helped us tremendously and I talk about him to everyone. =) He's 10 minutes away and provides a great service for really reasonable prices... it seems like you can find someone closer. Good luck!!

I would do it. But, you may be able to find a good chiro local to you that would save you time and gas money. Would your mom be willing to pay for her to go to someone local? Her chiro could probably recommend someone. A chiro can help with TMJ also. I am a strong advocate for chiropractic care.

Your daughter is already seeing a pediatric specialist chiro, right? So why would you take her to another one, two hours away each way, if you are satisfied with the pediatric chiro she is seeing? It sounds like your mom is pressuring you. There is just no need to do this if you are OK with the one your child has -- and the one she has is a specialist in dealing with kids, which it sounds like your mom's is not. Don't let mom guilt your or convince you to be out on the road, late at night, for what sounds like no real reason at all.

I would leave my daughter at home with her for a little "daddy daughter" time and go alone with my mom for a little "mom and me" time. That way, you are supporting your mom and respecting your husband. Leave her homw, at least for this 1st visit. Get a feel for it and see if it's something you might want to take her to next time. If so, have another talk with dad armed with more 1st hand information.

A family friend has a son who walks on his toes. My sister is a physical therapist, and she has been working on him for the past month or so. It has helped, but he may still need surgery. See if your insurance will pay for something like PT or Chiro and try it, but definitely find a place that is closer.
