Graduation Cap and Gown -- save or Reuse?

Now that I blew it on the cake -- I can't blow the cap and gown thing.

Do I buy another cap and gown for son #2 for his h.s. graduation, so each boy can have one as a keepsake? Or can I reuse son #1's cap and gown. I know neither boy cares right now, but maybe when they are old they will like having it as a keepsake?

So, do I buy another set, $30, or reuse it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The consensus seems to be that the gown is ugly (I agree), but it might be worth keeping the cap.

Thanks! I'm only going to buy the cap and tassel!

new cap, gown and tassel for each kid. a lot of times schools change colors, styles, etc for each year.

I actually still have my cap and gown, both tassels got lost somewhere along the line of military moves (or my kids tore them apart or something ... I really don't remember LOL) and I graduated in 1985.

Even if they were having the same style, color, etc (the schools here are the same year after year after year, not so when I graduated and not so in CA) I'd still get them their own set. It's THEIR graduation, not their brothers.

Well I think that I'd keep it and see where you're at when you get there. Each child may want their cap, but probably not their gown. I saved mine forever thinking that maybe I'd wear it for a Halloween costume or something and I never did, and I'm a sentimental girl, so I'm sure that boys wouldn't care.

This is so funny, just came up on Thursday with my daughter (she graduated in June). One of her lifelong friends is going to use her gown this year, my daughter's attitude was "what, am I going to sleep in it every night"? Her friend is going to get her own cap and tassel. Just the gown was $50!

I still have both my kids caps and gowns hanging in a closet. We did use them once for halloween. I have loaned them to a couple kids when the parents couldnt afford them. They did get their own caps, but the gowns dont seem to be a big deal to the kids. What made me upset was the 8th grade graduation we had to rent the gowns, for $30. That seemed way too expensive.

I still have both, but I am a girl ... but I agree that you MUST buy another cap and tassel for each to have.

I've yet to meet anyone who cared much about the gown. I kept my cap for several years, then just the tassel, which I still have tucked away somewhere. Not that special for me, I guess.

Let your sons know they should decide, and then live with the consequences. And I wouldn't urge them to hang onto things for sentimental reasons. We accumulate so much "stuff" that way.

Just check the color - amazing sometimes the difference in one red to another for example!

They won't care about the gown, but chances are when son # 2 graduates the school will decide to use another style, fabric, or color of gown. It's inevitable... sigh...

Mine couldnt care less that I still have their caps and gowns in my trunk of "stuff". I'm sure I will toss them out one day. I'd say go ahead and do the hand me down thing.... makes the gown more special to YOU if you decide to keep it hangin around for awhile.

My family's pretty sentimental, but I recently cleaned out our hall closet and donated all three of my kids' middle school AND high school graduation gowns --- not a one of them wanted to keep them. Oh, and while I was at it, I also donated my husband's and mine --- 35 years they've been hanging around my house. Other than using one of them once as a Halloween costume, no one had any desire to keep them.

The cap yes, the gown they are not going to care about, ever.

reuse the first set...I can see that maybe they would want their own cap...and definitely a tassle to hang from the rear view mirror of their car...but honestly...who really wants that ugly gown???

I'd keep it, Rose, and see what it looks like when your son becomes a senior. I might do that myself. Then again, it was raining cats and dogs and tigers during my older son's graduation, and he got rained on. So I'm not sure how things ended up with it. I should look!
