Thinking I might finally buy a GPS. I travel with my kids for sports and hate following the written directions and getting lost. What GPS do you have or have you had and liked and/or disliked and why? I don't want to spend a fortune but I don't want to go so cheap I will regret what I have purhcased. Looking on Amazon because I have a gift card.

What can I do next?

my phone has GPS but I also have a garmin nuvi and I really love it, especially the lane view and the live traffic updates. we use it anytime we take a trip longer than an hr even if we know exactly where we are going , just for the traffic updates.

I love my Garmen. Make sure it has voice directions that gives street names. Some of the less expensive models will say turn in 200 feet and not give a street name. My GPS is my best friend!!!

I have a Garmin and love it. My phone has Google maps which is even better. The only problem I find with Garmin is if a merchant doesn't pay for their service you could be sitting in front of a McDonalds and it will tell you it isn't there. I feel like their customer should be me not who they extort money from.

I have a Garmin. I was born without a homing pigeon gene. Its sad but my mom was also born without a homing pigeon gene. Now that I have a Garmin I no longer get lost.

Quite a few people told me TomToms are horrible. One gentleman told me he typed in the street address for a store and he ended up in a someone driveway.

My wife & I borrowed a Garmin from a friend to take a trip to relatives in NC. We followed the GPS without incident. When we got to our relatives house, not knowing what it looked like, & it was far back off the road, we passed it. The Garmin immediately beeped, map reconfigured & told us to go back the other way. Found the house. Spent a week driving around cities we've never been to like we lived there, thanks to the Garmin. Never got lost. If you miss a turn, it quickly updates & gives a new route to your destination.
Live updates are great. Be sure to update your maps ever once in a while.
Another friend had a TomTom. She tried to find our house. Tom told her to turn onto a road that no longer exsisted that was miles away from our house. Have also heard of other problems with this brand.

i love my gps, from sprint on my phone. it takes me everywhere. I'm new to this city and wherever i need to go i type in the name or address and takes me directly, if there's traffic it will give me another route. I guess that's how they all work but since its available on my phone, i take advantage of it. i think it works great. i highly recommend it. Or if u don't have sprint but have a smart phone u might be able to find an app for a gps. Good luck

Hi A.,

We've had many. My recommendation is buy a cheap one because they all die rather quickly. Find one that you can follow and understand. Some are more complicated than others. It's like the left brain/right brain thing...I personally prefer a Garmin over the other ones..

I was going to tell you to buy a Garmin and you won't go wrong, but it looks like everyone else has already done so. LOL I don't remember which model number it is, but they have one that comes with automatic yearly updates. This would be your best buy. Updates are about $70 per year if you don't have this feature.

I love my Garmin! All 5 of my kids also have Garmins. My daughter and son in law recently drove from Jacksonville, NC to San Diego, CA then to Chicago, IL and had no problems getting there without getting lost and never once looked at a map. They also used the find feature to find lodging, restaurants and various tourist attractions along the way.

I have a Garmin navi and I like it. It does what I need pretty well. Just back up your files before importing new maps. That's the only quibble I really have.
