Got a Roller & a Scooter @ 4 Months! Waking up & Bonking Head on Crib Rails HELP

My daughter is rolling and scooting all over and she's almost 4 months old. Her sleep is getting interrupted now because she moves so much and bonks her head against the crib rails which obviously wakes her up. We do not have the bumpers up for fear she will suffocate, are we too paranoid?

We were swaddling her and laying her on her back in a sleep positioner. She would kick so hard that she'd get out of the positioner and wiggle out of the swaddle. So out went the sleep positioner. We tried to swaddle again but she hated it because she was on her back and couldn't get to her fist which she loves so much. She is a tummy sleeper now, not much we can do to prevent that since she rolls on her own.

What can we do to help her sleep more soundly? She was sleeping from 8-5 each night, waking up to eat and then going back to bed until 8 am. Now she's up around 2:30 screaming and again at 5:30.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have never had problems with bumper...I suggest you get the book The Baby Whisperer. If you cluster 3 feedings from 7 - 11 it will help I bet. The book will explain it much more in detail. I worked like a dream for me. It will also help her learn how to soothe herself back to sleep on her own. Good Luck!

I have a 4-month-old who is rolling around in the crib, too! She started kicking her legs and waking herself up, so we swaddle her legs up to her chest and leave her arms out so she doesn't feel confined. So many people say they use bumpers without a problem, but I'm just too paranoid, so we got a breathable bumper. It's not as cushiony as normal bumpers, but it helps.

We've always had bumpers in my now 2.5yo son's crib. We also had blankets, pillows, stuffed animals. If your baby is old enough to roll and scoot, I don't see her suffocating herself on a bumper.

My daughter turned 2 in march and i still have the bumper set on her crib, I took it off once and she was bumping her head on the crib so i put it back on. She has never tried to step on it to get out and she would sleep on the corner of it, i just watched her to make sure if she couldn't breath that she would move her head and she did so i felt secure. she is a tummy sleeper too but i knew that she would move if she put her face down and couldn't breath. Good luck

I don't know what to tell you about the restless sleeping, but is she possibly cutting teeth. That may be causing the change in her sleep habits. If she is teething, it may help her sleep better if you use Orajel on her gums.

As a mom of 4 I would say GET BUMPERS!

As a Pedi RN I can tell you we have never seen or treated a baby for suffocation or near suffocation in the 14 years I have been there. And it is a large practice.

Good Luck!
