My 13 yo has asked for a GoPro for Christmas. It sounds like a cool thing but I'm not sure it will really get used much and be worth the cost. Would love feedback - do any of your kids have one and do they continue to love it/use it? And if so - do you have a model you recommend? Thanks in advance. Happy holidays!

N.,

my nephew has one - he's 27. He is an avid out-doors person and it's used regularly.

Is your child active outside? WHY does your child want one?

Groupon has a sale on GoPro's now. There's a accessory kit for $12.99 and the Hero4 Silver for $269.

I'd ask my child WHY they want one if they are NOT an outdoorsy person.

Ask your son/daughter what a GoPro is (I know you know what it is, I'm saying, make sure your child really understands) and how he/she expects to use it. For a 13-year-old, I'm just not sure why there would be a need for one, but maybe your child has some specific ideas.

My daughter is 21 and she has some friends who use and love GoPro. Many of them use them as s dash cam as well.

Why does your 13 yr old want one? They are fun but I'm not sure how your child's age group would use it.

why does he want it? does he do anything that will enable him to use gopro to record himself?
reason i ask is because i got the gopro last year for my 11 year old because she plays competitive tennis. she records herself during lessons and clinics and watches afterwards to see what she is doing properly and what she needs to work on. so yes it has been used constantly since last year.

My son is 14. I have learned the hard way not to buy him things he 'thinks' he wants. Or at least spend a ton on it first. He will usually lose interest in it, lose it altogether or break it or all of the above. lol

He has wanted a GoPro for a long time but in October for his birthday and right before we went on a cruise we got him a generic one. I didn't want to spend minimal $200 on ANOTHER thing he wasn't going to do long term. So he did use it some on the cruise but ended up dropping it when it was out of the case and broke it. We were (luckily) able to take it back and get another one. I don't think he's touched it since. It was $60 so not a huge loss.

I now tell him that we will get him a "basic" one of whatever it is he wants and only if he consistently uses it, doesn't break it, or lose it, then I'll consider upgrading it to a better model or whatever.

Currently he wanted to join a local indoor skate/jump/parkour (sp?) park. Membership is $150 per month and it's close to the house. We ended up buying him a mid-cost professional scooter and helmet. Surprisingly he has gone almost every day and is there for hours at a time. He has made a few new friends and has lost some weight. So this was a bonus for all of us. If he is still doing it and eventually wants an upgrade, I will be more willing to do that since he has done his part.

Hope this helps you. Good luck.

My son is an avid snowboarder, skateboarder, outdoorsy kid all around - and he's always been into filming his latest accomplishments. Since about grade 5, he and his friends have used our old (cheap) digital cameras to film their acrobatics, etc. They filmed underwater too in our pool. So I get the appeal. He's slightly older than your son is - and would really love one.

He knows a kid who is about 16 who has one, a friend of his. For now, I think it makes sense for my kid to wait at least a year or two. I've seen him break an ipad, and he can't even take care of his earbuds (they go through wash regularly). I think the maturity level has to be there for the price.
