Goose Egg on on Forehead

Ok, so i know this is common place for 3 year olds, but still does not make it any easier. So 2 weeks ago, my soon to be 3 year old son was playing with his ball in the house and went to reach to pick it up by the door and hit his forehead on the door hinge...(OUCH!!!). Immediately he started screaming and his forehead started swelling and bruising. We applied a cold compress has much as we could, but he did not let us for long, he did not want to be messed with at that time. Well his forehead looked really bad, a large goose egg, but was acting fine and back to playing in 20 minutes. My point is that it has been 2 weeks and the swelling is gone, but there is still a hard bump on that spot that has not gone away. He is always falling and hitting his head, this is one of many times. Is this normal for him to still have this bump, or will it go away in time??? Someone please let me know if this has happened to your kid and what I can do to make this bump go away.

What can I do next?

My third got angry because we wouldn't let him go out and play when he was two. To punish us he headbutted the door knob, yeah, I don't follow the logic either. Anyway it was almost six months before the lump went away. I asked his pediatrician about it at his check up. He said hard bumps to the head cause calcification not unlike what happens with a broken bone. Just the body protecting his head. Depending on how hard the bump it is reabsorbed into the body and goes away. For Andy it was six months, he really punished us. :-/

About 2 months ago my now three year old, 2 at the time, was outside playing with the other kids and they were building a fort, well smarties didn't pick up the hammer and she was playing with it. Really it would have been find cause she was just hitting a tree with it, but then she goes over to my son who was 11 and swinging on the swing and hits him with it...right in the temple. no one told me right away, my other dd did come in and let me know so I went to check on him and he had a black eye and a huge goose egg.

He still has a little knot there and the doc said it is perfectly normal, for them to take up to 6 months to completely go away.

Funny note, the little culprit told him she was sorry about 3 days later and promised to "Never hit him wif a hammer again, cause it made you cry".

I believe it can take awhile for bumps like this to go away. I have also always heard that it is better to have bumps that come outward rather than inward (because of potential for internal bleeding) and also to have bumps on the front or back of head, not on the sides as the skull is harder in those places. I would think that the biggest issue would have been watching for symptoms of a concussion such as: dilated pupils, dizziness, nausea, headaches, irritability and change in diet. Obviously since this happened some time ago, he must have been ok. Having said all that, I would call your doctor's on-call nurse and share this information with them. They can tell you for sure if it is anything to be concerned about. Take care!

4 kids here, many, many head bumps. and yes, it can take weeks for them to go down sometimes. It is harder for the body to reabsorb any under the skin bleeding on the head. It just takes time sometimes.

I've been through this with my own son. My nephew was such a head-bonker that we joked he needed a helmet just to sleep in. He could accidentally get a knot on his head in his sleep.

I'm fairly certain the bumps will go away. My son and nephew are huge, strapping boys now with no brain damage, miraculously (lol), and no lasting affects. It certainly didn't stunt their growth by any means.

Signs of an actual concussion would have been fairly obvious right away.
Vomitting, slurred speech, inability to balance, sleeping more than usual or being unable to wake.

You might want to run it past the pediatrician just to be sure, but knots can take a while to subside.

Just my opinion and best wishes.

I love arnica! Give right away and as directed. There is a pediatric dose called bumps and bruises at whole foods. It reduces swelling so much I can't believe it. Boys and their injuries go on through out life!!

might wanna go to dr just in case and maybe they have tips, 2 of my nephews have bumps on their heads that havent gone away in 16 years! i would want to check everything! but for future reference when the incident occurs, any bump and bruise, put butter on it. it sounds like an old wives tale, but it honestly works, everyone who i get to try it are shocked!
