Goof off - Please HELP

Ok I did something stupid today. My family and I are getting ready for vacation soon and while I was washing my children's blankets, unfortunately I put on what I thought was Goo Gone. Come to find out it was Goof Off. And not the Goof Off made as a stain remover. It was the Goof Off made to help take off gum, latex paint, etc. So yes it was the oil based one. I only put it on one blanket and used quite a bit. I ended up washing a quilt, 4 blankets and 2 pillow pets in this load. I have washed the load a total of 3 times now and the smell is still there. I have tried Purex Baby and Tide along w/ the Downy Crystals and Tide Pods. Nope the smell is still there. I'm very scared that even though I have washed it 3 times, since it is oil based, that if it gets too hot, it will catch fire. I'm wondering if maybe I should just throw them away and buy new. I hate to do that because the kids are attached to these blankets but I also don't want them sucking on the blankets for some odd reason and end up with poisoning because of it.

Can someone please let me know if this is dangerous? If not, can you tell me what I can use to get the smell out?

I have let them dry outside for about 10 minutes, unfortunately it was late so the sun wasn't going to do much help. I plan to get them back outside in the morning. I will try the baking soda trick though.

What can I do next?

I made the mistake of throwing a paint rag in the hamper with some towels. It was also soaked in Goof Off!

I second the Dawn recommendation! I got a big bucket and some hot water and soaked the towels in Dawn. I had to dump out the bucket, wring out the towels and soak them in more Dawn a few times.

I finished out by washing the towels in regular detergent in the washing machine and doing a vinegar rinse. The smell came out just fine!

Good luck!

I think you should put them out in the sun and let them soak it up for awhile. Wash again with lots of baking soda.

Yup. Use Dawn.

Growing up, we were pretty broke... sometimes, if we ran out of laundry soap, we would have to use Dawn on our laundry... Our machine lasted over 15 years, so I'm pretty sure it won't ruin your washer...

Just don't use too much. :) If you are uncomfortable putting it in your washer, you could fill a tote with Dawn and water, and hand-agitate everything in it, then put it through the wash cycle in your washer without adding any soap. :)

with it being oil based maybe try Dawn dishsoap and your laundry detergent mixture.

Dawn is good at breaking up oil and grease and the laundry detergent will help wash them out maybe.

Just a thought.

Good luck

This happened to me. I threw a goof off rag in the trash and my daughter put it int he washer to "help me"...I didn't notice. The rag was SOAKED in Goof Off. I called Goof off, because everything I tried didn't work. The smell was also in my washing machine and making my whole house stink! They told me to wash everything with dawn detergent. It has to be dawn to break down the grease. I was warned that with front load washers you can't put too much in it, or it will cause too many suds. At the time, I had a top load. It took two washings, but it worked like a charm! But I had to go outside and smell test everything because my house reeked so bad. :) They told me to sprinkle baking soda in the washer and leave it open for a few days. I asked about fires and they said they have no record of their product causing fires.

I know this is perhaps a duh question, but did you check the label on the Goof Off? Maybe poison control could be of assistance if you're still unsure. I agree with Grandma T's advice, though. Good luck.

No, they will not catch fire. The oil has spread to all the items and as a result there is not enough in any one place to cause a problem either with fire or sucking on them. Actually, I doubt that Goof off catches fire. It has an oily base but contains other ingredients too.

You might try washing them in vinegar.

Do not put Dawn dish washing soap in a washing machine!!!!! It's suds will ruin your machine. Try the d/w soap on one item in the basin. If that works, wash them in the bath tub. Do not put d/w soap in your washing machine. (My father was an appliance repairman.)

I'd try calling the company and asking them for suggestions. After all one does wash an item after using it.

You might also try soaking the items over night in water with detergent and baking soda or even OxyClean.

Run a wash with Dawn in it. It breaks up the oil and removes the smell. Just don't go crazy with it because the suds will invade your laundry room.

Oh to the no Dawn will ruin your washer, if have an HE and as long as you use a little, it will not hurt the machine. I have done it several times because I actually use Goof Off on some stains.

I would use a good degreasing product like Dawn dish washing liquid.

If needed, I'd go to a Coin operated laundry to do it there vs my home.

I remember WAY back when my grandmother bought a degreaser from Stanley Home Priducts and that was good stuff!

The Dawn should do the trick tho, just not in a HE washer!!

A side note, Dawn is used in oil spills to wash up the oil slicked critters. I'm sure it will work. :)
