Good Start Formula?

My four month old daughter is currently on Enfamil Lipil powder. She has had no problems with it at all and never suffers from gas. However, the powder doesnt dissolve well in room temp water so I am using part hot water (to melt powder) and then using room temp water to make her bottle. (I was afraid of the bubbles from shaking it too much.) What a pain! I heard from a friend that Good Start powder dissolves easily in room temp water and you dont need to shake it. I am nervous about changing her formula but would love to use something that is easier to use! Anyone have good or bad exp with Good start?

I changed from Similac to Good Start with my 1st baby (now 2) and I am using it with my 6 week old now. It does dissolve really easy with minimal shaking.

I have 5 yr old twins and I do not remember how well Good Start disolved. But we tried Similac & Enfamil and both gave my daughter stomach issues, spitting up & gassy. Good Start was what she ended up doing the best with. It is gentle on their stomachs and this formula ended up working great with both of my babies. Good choice to switch!

Is't Good Start one of those formulas for older babies? I can't remember. I would compare the ingredients of your current formula with Good Start formula. An idea is to use a Brawn blender to mix up a days' formula. Since your baby is doing so very well, I would hate to change her formula and then you end up with a baby with gas, fussy, etc.

I had to supplement with formula and I always used the Good Start Supreme with DHA. It does mix up easier and I never had any issues with foaming. Friends used other formulas and they always had to let the bubbles settle before feeding. When your baby is screaming for food this can seem like forever! I think that you will like it. Buy a small can and try it out. Your daughter should do just fine with switching over. Good luck!

We started with Enfamil, which gave my daughter horrible gas and constipation. Then we moved to Similace which made her spit up horribly and got really foamy when shaking it. We ended on Good Start which helped with those things, but didn't make them go away. I didn't notice that it dissolved any easier then the other two. Do you put the formula in and then the water or the other way around? I always did water first. I remember sometimes if we put it in last it would cake into the nipple so I found it easier to kind of spin it around and then start shaking.
I would say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" personally, but my daughter has such tummy issues I didn't want to mess with stuff. The Good Start is good, but it is more expensive. I also think the manufactures "are not socially responsible" according to my friend...I didn't have a choice, so I didn't ask what she meant :o)
Best of luck and congrats!!!!

Here's a good site w/ lots of information on different formulas... how they're made, what they're made of and how they digest, ect... http://askdrsears.com/html/0/T000100.asp. The only thing is that they can be a little breast feeding centric but it's still good info. Apparently, Good Start is the only one that is 100% whey proteins like breast milk. We used the same one you are using but got the premade liquid. Not as cost effective but you don't have the powder problems.

Good luck!

take care,

I have always used Good Start Supreme with DHA and the natural cultures with my daughter. She had terrible reflux her first four months and this was the only thing that she'd keep down and didn't make her constipated. It mixes easier than other formulas even in cold water. If you're very worried about the bubbles issue get the Dr. Brown bottles. They work well and Platex and Dr. Brown nipples work with them. Expect some constipation from changing the formula for a day or three.
I suggest, if you're going to make the switch, doing half of one and half of the Good Start for a day or two and then increase the ratio the third day, etc. until at the end of the week you have her all on the new formula. Changing over too fast can give her painful gas, reflux and constipation. I don't know about Enfamil Lipil but I know that the Good Start Supreme uses whey protein that is partially digested for them. So, it's milk based but they also make a soy based one. Hopefully, she won't have any problems with a change over.

Hi D.
I had the opposite experience, in that Enfamil was way too rich for my son and he had terrible gas. We found carnation good start (for which we read that it was the closest formula to mother's milk) not sure that's true :) BUT it was GREAT......... no more gas, mixed up easily and was so much better than the enfamil... Prior to the good start, we tried ALL brands pretty much and none worked as well as the good start. We had a great experience with it and I highly recommend it..

good luck!!

Hot water may reduce the nutritional content of the formula. Put room temp water in the bottle first, then add the powder. Shake well. The bubbles shouldn't be a problem for baby's digestive system, but you can always let it settle a bit before feeding if there is a concern. Call the formula manufacturer if you have questions, they are usually helpful. I wouldn't change the formula if your baby has been doing well on it so far! Best of luck.

My son did great on Good Start. It does mix easily. I still shook it a little. It didn't foam or have any sticky clumps of undissolved formula. I loved it! I haven't had any problems switching formulas cold turkey with my children but some people do and wean them onto a new formula. Good luck!

I use powder formula for my son as well, and it sounds a little cheesy, but for four bucks I got a "formula mixer" at Babies R Us. Mixes the formula up in a flash! Maybe worth giving it a try, I would try not to change her formula. Here is the mixer I got... http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2792622.

I used it for both of my girls and loved it. I started my first daughter on Enfamil and Similac and she was also spitting it up and couldn't keep it down. We switched to Good Start and it worked great. I loved the fact that I didn't need to heat it up, I could just take the bottle with water in it and if she was hungry, add the few scoops she needed, shake it and she was ready to go! By the time I had my second daughter, I didn't even think twice about it, we just went straight to Good Start and she never had any problems. I highly endorse it and it is cheaper than those "name brands" the doctor's endorse. I bought mine at Wal-mart for an even better deal.

Good Luck!

I've had a great experience with Good Start--another thing that might help if you don't want to change is a formula mixer--you can buy it for $4 at Babies R Us.

We used it and liked it. It actually seemed to produce less spit-up in our kids than the Enfamil or Similac did. And yes, it did seem to dissolve a lot easier! You can always try a gradual switch over a few days just to be sure you don't throw her little system out of whack.

We used Good Start (the green can) and had no problems - we just put the formula in the bottle, put the water in, put the cap on and shook it and it was fine. We started our son on Similac and he had a lot of gas - once he was on Good Start we had no problems (pretty stinky diapers though). Plus our doctor said it was the closest to breast milk.

It does disolve easly with just room temperature water, but I believe is more beneficial when it comes to being good for their digestive system. My son is now one year old, but was on good start from about two weeks old and has never had any gas problems or anything else, due to this formula, hope this helps you.

We had a very good experience with Good Start Supreme. We did try the Good Start Supreme with Active Cultures for a while, but it gave our baby gas. The regular Good Start Supreme worked great, and of all the formulas we tried it was the easiest to prepare in room-temp water. Stirring dissolved it easily in a couple of seconds.

When I weaned and went to formula Good Start was the best for my daughter. She took to it well, not excessive gas and the diapers seemed less stinky than with Enfamil. I would recommend it.

We also used the nestle good start formula for my daughter because she had a sensitive stomach. What we did was made enough to last for couple days. I would use the blender and mix the formula in it and then store in a sealed container, just let the foam settle. It was great because we always had formula ready to go and it was nice and smooth, so it was easy on her stomach. I wish I had thought of it with my son. good luck

My daughter was on Good Start from birth. A couple of times I tried to change it on her, mostly due to cost, and every time, she refused everything but the Good Start. I actually tasted a couple of them myself and though that several of the different brands were a bit chalky. Also, you can call Good Start and ask them to send you a sample so that if you find it doesn't work, you're not out the expense. Good luck!
