I have 4 boys ages 12, 9, 7, and 4. Their socks rip very quickly at the toe or sole and it's not because they do it purposely. I have tried many brands and have had it! Even the "gold toe" have ripped. Anyone have a socks brand they love?
I just have to put my 2 cents in since someone mentioned darning socks. It's truly a lost art and all my friends used to make fun of me for doing it, but darn it all....(pun intended) if those socks didn't last 3 times as long after I darned them! :)
So, if you feel like taking a trip back in time, here's what you do. You need some THICK thread, almost like DMC floss or embroidery floss. Thread it through a needle with a hole big enough for the thread. Put a light bulb in the end of the sock so it keeps its shape. (Don't break it!) Now just make a "satin stitch" over the hole. It starts to look like a patch. It's a bit thicker than the original material, but it's soft and smooth and chances are you'll never get a hole in that sock again. I think it's kinda fun, but that's just me.

All of the brand that these wonderful mothers have mentioned are great brand, but I too have a basket full of mis-matched socks of all of these brands. Why you ask? My boys, ages 16, 14 and 12, will wear there sock outside, inside, without shoes. They don't care what they do. I don't know how many times I've just given up and bought new socks, once a month just to keep ahead of the holes. Also, if you wash the socks with regular bleach, you will shorten the life of those socks. There's no clear cut answer but maybe tell these boys that when they come into the house that they have to take off both there shoes and socks and put on a pair of slippers.

Hi M.,
Look at the package on the back when you buy socks. Some have guarantees for wear n tear, I believe. I believe most do. Thay may help with you having to buy socks allll the time. Same thing goes with most products you buy in a store like kitchen accessories too. Hope this helps....good luck.

I have found a style of socks at Target. I am not sure of the brand name, but know that they are sized according to the number of gold rings around the toe area. They are in the children's section of socks. I am very pleased with the way they wash up and have held up well for a family that tends to wear out the heals. Good Luck!

At marshall's, My fiance and I have both bought socks there and have had good luck, our daughter is just over a year, so we have only used the socks from babies-r-us for her but also with good results. All our socks from target, kohl's ect. have been getting holes at a surprising rate and I dont even wash them in bleach!

We used to by the thin socks at stride rite and they worked really well now we just buy the cheapies at target and we haven't had a problem. One thing to think about is the flooring you have in your house. If they are walking around a lot in the socks in your house it could be more to do with that than the brand of sock. In our old town house we had laminate floors and our socks would get holes all the time if we didn't wear slippers.

Do you have tile floors in your house?? We have a lot of tile in our house and we go through socks extremely fast too. I try to get my kids to wear slippers that helps with the wear, I've tried all sorts of socks but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
Good luck

I had the same problem, but not after I started buying GOLD TOE SOCKS from JC Penney. They are the best I've found so far, and really hold up to the wear and tear of boys. My son is now grown, and both he and my husband still wear them with no complaints. Good luck!

I purchased all my kids clothes at Sears. They have a Kid Vantage program that anytime a shirt, shorts, jeans, socks, snopants, jackets, any clothing items, get a hole, they will replace it at no charge, as long as it is the same size. You do need to hang on to your receipts though, as that needs to accompany the return/exchange.

Smartwool or Wigwam work best. They make them for little kids and for all seasons. I get them at REI. They are a little more expensive but they have lasted the longest in our house.

We like the Joe Boxer brand socks. They seem thicker which is nice for winter time and we have not had any issues with holes or tearing. They also are not any more expensive than the thinner socks.

I LOVE sonoma socks from Kohls, they sell them in six packs for the little ones, and I'm finding they wash really well and my son doesn't trash them as easily. They usually run sales on them too so they aren't too expensive.

My son and husband both wear Hanes socks and haven't had any problems. Though I would recommend not bleaching them every time you wash them. The bleach can cause them to rip because it weakens the fabric.

I would make sure the toe nails are cut short enough if you think the ripping is too frequent. That's how I always seem to rip mine at the toe. Or whats that thing? Darning the socks? I don't know how to do it and it doesn't sound like much fun, but it could save you money because socks can be expensive.

I don't have a favorite brand of socks but I can say that you should take a good look at the kids' feet. Do their toe nails need to be clipped? Boys tend to let their toe nails get pretty rough or long and that causes holes in sock. ALSO - check out the skin on their feet. My boys have very rough & callused heals and on the ball of their feet. Try smoothing their rough edges and putting lotion or vaseline on with their socks at night.
These couple of things seem to help with our issues with holes in socks!

I have that problem with my husband. He can get a new pack of socks and in less than a month most of them have holes in them, mainly on the bottom of them. I think it is because they slide in his shoes, they are tooo big. They are the white sock gray toe. He is a forester and is always walking. He doesn't do it to the thicker socks. I think the socks are to thin...I think??? :)
I know how you feel - like you are always trashing sock -ugh
