We bought my 13 yr old daughter's furniture from Haverty's when she was a baby. It is solid wood, good quality but not the highest quality we prefer because we knew it would get banged up a little, etc as she grew up.
It is still a nice looking set and we certainly got our money's worth. It still looks nice enough that she will be able to take it to college and on with her if she wants to.
My opinion with Ikea is that you can get something that will work for a while then you will have to replace it due to the quality. It is not made to last a long time. It is great store for a short term furnish of a dorm room or something like that.
Other stores that have good items are Weirs, Robb and Stuckey and the Amish Furniture Showcase.
Haverty's is a middle of the road type store. Good luck!
