So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone and their advice for London, and Amsterdam. We stayed in London for 3nights and 4 days. London was pricey as expected. I think we could have done it in 2 nights and 3 days. For healthy people, wanting to be thrifty with your money, walking is the way to go to the main sights, with the exception of the Bridge the rest are within walking distances from each other. If you aren't into walking for what ever reasons, the bus costs 2 pounds each, a total of $8 one way for 2 poeple. We rode it once from Picadilly Square to ST. Pauls, it took about 20 minutes due to traffic. We had the fish and chips, yummy as well as the Ale. We closed it out with a boat ride from down the Thimes River (not sure of the spelling). We also went to the tulip gardens,at the Kukenhof in Lisse, Holland very beautiful. I do suggest booking at least 2 months in advance and try some of the casino hotels. We stayed at a regular hotel, 3 blocks from the tulips and paid 110 Euro. However we could have stayed at a couple casinos for 80-85 euro. We just didn't know the area prior to getting there. The casinos were only 10 minites driving time and only 25 minutes from Amsterdam. If nayone has any questions, i'll be glad to answer.

I love London!! Indian food is really good there. And for a quick bite that is healthy and not too expensive, the Pret a Manger chain is very good. They're all over the place. There is a good pub near the Tower of London that has a good lunch at reasonable prices and great atmosphere. It's across the street from the Subway (sandwich shop).

Hi T.,
Stay off the beaten path in London. Pubs are good and serve hearty meals in massive amounts. We fing that a pub meal will feed two of us so alot of times we shared. We were assigned to RAF Mildenhall for 3 years and London is my all time favorite city. The trains are so easy. And a lot of theattrctions are free or cheap for even ages up to 25. Ask everywhere fo a military discount and some of the attraction like London Towers, Hamden Court and some place else offer entance to all 3 at a discount price and the tickets can be used when ever. Good luck and Have fun L. Loucks. Aviano AB Italy

In London look for the mcDonalds. It is very expensive here and McDonalds is about the cheapest place you can eat. Also take a look down some of the side streets. Usually in any big city the resturantes on the side streets are the cheapest. Also you can ask the locals when you get there. They can point out some good places to go to. I live in the UK and when we go to London we take a pack lunch.

Hi T.,
I am an ex soldier and am a spouse in Bamberg and have been here two months, although this is my third tour to Germany. Bamberg as well as other posts has their issues. Elementary school students must wear uniforms, my recommendation if you have a child this age...shop J.C. Penney for IZOD brand uniforms. The more you buy in one order the lower the price for the items and better quality.
Bamberg is a nice place if you take the opportunity to go to the downtown area. Inprocessing should be fairly easy since you are coming from another station in Germany and housing should be easier (although I do not agree that they should do this) since they are putting priority on those who come from other stations in Germany.
Good luck to you and if you can please let me know what unit you are coming to. I am an MP wife and am open to welcoming more people soldiers and spouses to the Battalion family.

London is a great place! There is a really good Thai restaurant called Thai Square. It is in Trafalgar square across from Texas Embassy (another restaurant). It is not too expensive and it is a very nice atmosphere. I loved London. Do the hop on/hop off tour bus. You can go all around London and see the sites all day while getting on and off at your leisure. Nothing in London is cheap because of the exchange rate so you just gotta kind of suck it up. Didnt have any bad experiences. All of the tourist areas are pretty safe so I would worry about that. I saw Lion King which was pretty good. The changing of the guard at Buckingham palace is nice. too.

I have been to Amsterdam but dont remember where I ate! I know of some good things to do in Amsterdam if interested in that as well as a good place to stay.

Eat at pubs or in China town. There is always the cheap and cheerful chippy selling kebabs....or you can resort to the supermarket or Boots for a quick sandwich and drink. I would also try eating lunch in the business districts as they often have cheaper lunches than the tourist locations. You can also try ordering your food early as some pubs and eateries give discounts between 2-4pm. We are currently stationed in the UK and go to London often. Let me know if you need anything further!
Cheers!

Went to London last month. It is all expensieve. They take pounds only. Look at the pound rate it was $2.08 to but one pound. It's kind like when you look at someting times it by 2.
I ate at the Hard Rock Cafe and they give 15% to military just show your ID to the waiter and at the store as well. It's on Picadilly Circus Road, street. It's near Buckingham Palace and the Gardens.
There is a GREAT Thai place there as well. Not sure of the name just went in.
Hope this helps

T.,

We are stationed in The Netherlands and LOVE IT! I have never been to London so no advice there but in The Netherlands there is lots to do! In Amerstdam there is the I am Amsterdam card that you can get for 24, 48 or 72 hours that is good for all the public transportation in the area along with GREAT discounts for the attractions and resturants. I attached the link belong for it. It is well worth the money!!! Also, another good area by Amsterdam is what my husband and I call "Holland in a nutshell" it is a tourist attraction village outside of there about 30 minute drive. You pay 5€ to park your car and the entrance is free. You get to see inside of windmills, cheese being made, wooden clogs be made (and 1,000's to purchase) mustard mill, pancake restaurant, boat tour and more. I attached the link as well for it. The is another great area to visit.

Have fun touring!
