Good Devotional?

I am looking for a really good daily devotional for me or my husband and I to do. It doesn't have to have any sort of theme, but every time I go to my wonderful Christian book store, I feel inundated with titles and have no idea where I want to begin! I have done a few devotionals in the past that were okay, but I want something that really has me thinking and questioning my faith. I want the "aha" moment often instead of once in a blue moon. If any of you have a favorite devotional or a favorite Christian author (because I could use some good reading too), I would love to know about them!

Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies very much! I really appreciated your help. I found a devotional for my hubby and I to do together, and found one at the store, "Be Still and Let your Nailpolish Dry" that is perfect for me! I will definitely keep this list for the future though!

Night Light: A Devotional for Couples by James C. Dobson - It's awesome! They are short, and have great questions that get you talking. It's about all stages of marriage - We skipped the stuff that wasn't relevant to us (kids) and when we went back through the book again, we picked up on the things that had changed and were relevant again! Excellent book!

I really like Christian authors like Gary Smalley, James Dobson (Dare to Discipline and Bringing up Boys), and Jimmy Evans (Marriage on the Rock) if you want topics on marriage/family that challenge and encourage. I recommend Stormy Omartian (Power of a Praying Wife), Beth Moore (Breaking Free), Joyce Meyer (Battlefield of the Mind) for women's issues and/or overcoming our past. If you really want something super meaty, then My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers is VERY thought-provoking and challenges your thinking and faith on just about every level. For Christian fiction I like Francine Rivers too. Her book Redeeming Love is good. :)

You want some truly eye opening experiences, here they are. Even though I've read this 6 times, I still read it over and over. I guarantee you have never seen the truth spelled out like this before. You will be flabergasted and amazed at how much error is being taught in the churches. It is a MUST for every Christian. Written so plainly, I even teach my children with it :

"A Scriptural Journey to Discover the Grace of God" - by Bob George.
It can be found at www.realanswers.net (go to the store section and look under "study guides".)

I second the Max Lucado, I also have a book 5 minute devotions for moms. If you go to one for the store clerks and describe to them what you need, they'll help direct you. Those guys have excellent knowledge when it comes to what different people might need.

Hi M.,

I pray all is well with you this evening! My husband and I end each night with a couples devotion. We facilitate a marriage group and we give out couples devotions often. A few we had read and given out are God's Word for Couples: Devotions for Growing Together by Toni Sortor & Pamela McQuade; Moments Together for Couples by Dennis & Barbara Rainey; Marriage Minutes by Robert & Cheryl Moeller; Our Love is Here to Stay by Tony & Lois Evans (our favorite). I have a few if you would like me to mail you one. For women, two of my favorite are Search My Heart, O God by Kay Arthur and Sunset with God by Honor Books - they have a whole line of books (Tea Time with God, Breakfast with God, etc.) I pray this helps! Have a great evening!

I don't remember the name of it, but my Grandmother bought me the most lovely daily devotional flip calendar. It had a marriage and family theme with a devotional and scripture for each day.
It didn't take up much space and it can be used over and over since it's not specific as to the actual year. Just 365 days of inspirational prayers, etc.
I have seen them at bookstores.
You might try something like that.
It takes less time than an actual book and it's kind of nice to flip the page and start out with a thought for the day.

Best wishes.

I am Methodist and we have a booklet that comes out every other month, Upper Room. It has a daily verse, prayer and story. Also, the other night I had the wonderful opportunity to hear Thelma Wells and you can check out her site: www.thelmawells.com. I believe she has daily devotions too.

Oswald Chambers! The original or the updated version are great!

For a not necessarily "daily" book, I recommend "Driven by Eternity" by John Bevere.

Good luck!

ps. I am with you! Trying to pick out a devotional is like looking for a specific water droplet in a waterfall! :)

After reading "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren I signed up through the website to receive daily emails. I believe its called the daily connection. The book and daily connection are truely inspirational and keep motivating me to this day. I read the book in 2007! I believe the website is purposedrivenlife.com and you can find the book anywhere like Target or Barnes & Nobles. Enjoy!
