The cream that m doctor refers to us is Eucerin. My 1 year old daughter has severe eczema and it does wonders for her skin. Hope in helps out.
Durning the winter months my 4 year old son has very dry itchy skin especially on his legs we have a humidifier in the house and I put cream on him daily everyone else in our household is fine. Recently his legs have devopled red sores on his calves. I believe the sores developed because he is itching them I have been putting baby oil in his baths and now I put vaseline at bedtime and gold bond. this has help, however I wanted to know if there is anything otc that would heal up these sores and keep his skin moisturized. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you everyone for your tips and advice. I wend out and bought Eurerin w/Aquaphor I will try it and see what happens. If this doesn't work someone suggested a home remedy with crisco. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

My 3 1/2 year old daughter has eczema and I love using Aveeno Baby Cream. My son has milder dry skin and sometimes gets the little patches and I will rub some aquaphor on them after bath. You might want to try using a mild soap (Dove bar soap) and limiting baths to about 5 minutes or so. I also like using the Aveeno bath soaks. Hope this helps, I know how rough it is to see them struggle with the dry skin.
I have mild excema...probably didn't spell that right...and I found out quite by accident that Avon Clinical line and wrinkle cream works really well on very dry skin. I use it now on my arms as well as my face. You can buy it usually half off on ebay. I guess I would just make sure it's ok for children before you try it though.
Try using Aquaphor on him. It's made by Eucerin and is sold over the counter. I use it around my son's mouth b/c he licks it until it's raw due to his anxiety. I've found myself using it on my daughter and self when needed too. It's an ointment that includes a protective ingredient. It's wonderful!
Give it a try.

Use hydrocortison creme 1% on the severe spots on his legs. Generic brands work just as well as the name brands, it's the same med. Limit baths to every other day and just use luke warm water. I've heard that baby oil can actually dry skin out worse, but not really sure on that one. Check your laundry det. too. My son gets worse winter dry skin if I use a harsh detergent like Tide and I've heard this from other moms too. Hope this helps!!!!
Both my kids have this problem. The 1% hydrocortisone creme works well and I also use the Eucerin. Make sure you apply when the just get out of the tub. The Eucerin will work best then. My son had it so bad his legs would bleed from itching. He has outgrown this (he's 6) but my 3yo dtr has the same problem. I did recently try Arbonne's ABC lotion and that worked well too but a bit pricey and you have to find a rep. Hopefully your little one will outgrow this.
Good Luck

Myself and a few others in my family have had bouts with dry skin. I've found that the best cure is one my great grandmother told me about years ago, and I've been using all of my life. CRISCO, plain white crisco. If theres an itch along with it, you can mix in a little bit of OTC hydrcortizone (1%). My daughter's ped has fallen in love with the remedy for herself after asking me what I did to cure her dry patches within a week.
I have had really good luck with Eucerin Calming Cream. It is approved for children and it keeps my son from itching all day. Also I have learned that if you try a cooler bath temp. the skin doesn't dry out as much. Also more frequent but shorter baths worked better yet. Goodluck.
Try Cetaphil cream (in the tub, not a tube or bottle). It's expensive, but lasts a long time. Don't bathe your son in hot water, use lukewarm water instead, and apply the cream immediately after you blot him dry. Good luck!
Check with pediatrician to be sure he does not have a staph infection. Some ointments only make it worse. For dry skin, my pediatrician recommended Aquaphor - very gentle for kids. Also, comes in small, travel size containers so you can carry in purse, tote, or car to have on hand whenever you need it.
M. ---I have found out that Olive Oil is working great for us. I know that it sounds weird but it is a natural way to heal skin. goodluck
Acquofor is awesome!
I hear this every day at work, I'm a beauty advisor, and I tell everyone the same thing.. aquafore or Eucerine are great and they work. Other great option that are less expensive and as effective are corn huskers lotion, bag balm, and anything by aveno. Try putting the lotion on the baby morning and night, and dont completely dry his skin off after a bath, just pat dry then apply the lotion, this will help retain moisture.
My daughter has had dry skin this winter and I found that Aquaphor by Eucerin works the best. It is on ointment so I always put it on her at bed time. Try it and let me know. I LOVE it, it works great on Diaper rashes also.
My son has excema. Daily moisture i use mineral oil, THIS IS CHEAP, same as baby oil, yet slightly thicker, no fragrance, which can cause irritation. When it's red and dry use hydrocortisone cream (anti-itch). Dry looking eucering/aquaphor.
My daughter had a similiar problem, but not as severe. My doctor told me to make sure especially during the winter months to not give her a bath every day and to use soaps that are gentle. ( I believe Dove was one of them). For me this seemed to help along with the baby lotion.
Good Luck

Eucerin or Cetaphil is both hypoallergenic and great for dry skin and both can be used on kids. Best of luck.
