Good Cheap Car Seat

Everything is going well enough I think we'll actually make it to the end of this pregnancy! This puts me in the position of needing to purchase a car seat, something I have never done before. We are paying for baby out of pocket, so of course we are looking for deals on everything we can.

My dream is to find a convertible car seat (faces back for infants and can be turned around for toddlers) that is good quality and costs around $100 (cheaper is better). We don't think we need something that can act as a carrier. Mamas, if this is possible, I need brand names and sources to find them! I've tried searching the internet, but there is just so much stuff online it is hard to make sense of it all, so I figured I would ask some real moms who know stuff.

Our car is a 1992 Geo Prizm, if that affects anything.

Thanks for your help!

Hi J.,

One thing I would not want to save money on is a carseat - if you buy 2nd hand, you don't know if the car was ever in an accident and if the seat was impacted negatively. Generally car seats are not supposed to be sold for safety reasons - they should come straight from the manufacturer, not anothers garage. A top of the line carseat is that usually for a reason - much reseach and development to warrant costing top of the line prices.
Baby's safety in the carseat is one thing to not put a $$ amount on.

Just my 2 cents :)
J.

We also have the Cosco Scenera and love it! My daughter is older than an infant-16 months-but she is still small at about 19lbs so we have her rear facing. She did start out in an infant carrier, but it was getting bulky and awkward as she got older, so we went looking for a good convertible. The reviews on the Scenera were great, so we chose that seat. I absolutely recommend it for anyone on a budget!

I second the Cosco Scenera. It's the seat I'm currently using for my son. When it's not on sale, it's about $55. It might be a little tight in the back of a Geo Prizm, but you can probably make it fit, especially if you don't keep the front seats all the way back. You can buy the Scenera at most places, Target, Walmart, etc. Keep an eye out for sales.

K Mart has a Costco Scenera Convertible Car seat on sale right now for 35 dollars. I went to a safety fair when i was pregnant and this is the car seat they recommended because it has never had any issues or recalls. Problem though it is only on sale through today, however it goes on sale every couple of months.
