My daughter got a surprise iPad for Christmas. I was wondering, are there any good games that you know of? And what about some educational apps? I'm willing to pay a few dollars per app if it's a good one.

Thanks so much!!

I have an 8-yr old boy, so not too many suggestions, but Minecraft is all the rage and great for both boys and girls. We are not video gamers at all but Minecraft is actually pretty cool and let's them build worlds from their imaginations. It also takes things down to the basic elements and has them create their worlds by combining these elements (ie. you need flint & steel to make fire).

Also, Grandpa bought him a $50 iTunes gift card when he first received the iPad. I loaded it and password protected it, so when he wants to download an app, he needs my sign-in to approve it. The $50 is still going strong 2 years later!

Finally, they can download books from iTunes too and save them under iBooks. This was great for the airplane and car rides. Hope she enjoys it!

I don't know if Leo's Pad is too young, but my 6 yr old likes it. And Angry Birds in most forms is good - physics.

ETA: Kids Discover Magazine has a lot of apps for kids on different topics. And I second Minecraft. It's taught some kids I know to read better via the instruction manuals.

Little Story--can write your own story and "publish" it to friends and family

Storia--if you order from Scholastic book orders, this app allows you to buy e-books

iOrnament--my kids love this one just to make and manipulate really cool designs

Sky View--great app for star gazing

My Incredible Body--the coolest app we have, with really cool ways of teaching about the body

Dragon Box--I wish I had this app when I was learning algebra!!

Epic!--there is a $5 monthly charge, but there is access to hundreds of great kids' books

AppsGoneFree--every day it highlights apps that are available for free for a limited time. Not all apps are kid appropriate, but some of our favorite apps I've found that way.

The Teach Me apps are cheap and awesome. There is Teach Me 2nd Grade and Teach Me 3rd Grade depending what level she is at. My daughter loves it.
