Hello Mamas! We lost our golden retriever in December to cancer and are now looking for a golden retriever puppy from a reputable breeder. I have searched online and there are tons of breeders, but it is hard to choose. Does anyone have a breeder they would recommend? I don't mind driving to WI, IN or IA for the right puppy. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Have you thought of checking the shelters in the area? There are many purebred dogs there in need of homes.

Covalcreekkennels.com
We got our dog from there 2 years ago and we love him. My cousin also got one and is very happy, too.

I am sorry for your loss. We too were faced with the same dilema 2 years ago when we lost our golden after 15 years. It was daunting to find a breeder we felt comfortable with. We got our boy from Mattsons Goldens. http://www.mattsonsgoldens.com. It is a small breeder in western IL-take I-88 all the way to the Missisippi River and you are there (about 2 hours). Our boy is big! 110lbs, but that is what we wanted. He was a litter of Chunk (110lbs) & Roxy (70lbs). He was one of the last litters of Roxy and now they are breeding Jay Jay. In fact I just looked at the website and she just had a litter Jan 1st. I wish we could get another one! But then I would never get to sit on my sofa again! He is a very healthy dog and we have had him for two years. He is great with our son and gets along with other dogs. Also our neighbors got their golden girl from Sievers in southern IL-near St. Louis, they are a big time breeder. She is a great looking dog with a great disposition, she also cost twice as much ;). If you decide to go to Mattsons let Heather know "George" aka "Little Chunk" sent you! If you have any other questions about them let me know.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your Golden. Dogs really become such a part of our families! We got our Golden Retriever from Dichi Goldens in Wisconsin. www.dichigoldens.com and I can't say enough good things about them. They will want to meet you and your family first before committing to giving you a puppy because they really care about the homes that the puppies are going to. They only breed Golden Retrievers and they are very passionate about it which was important to me. They are also interested in a relationship and not just selling a puppy to you. I have contacted them a few times over the past six years just to ask questions specifically about the breed. They always look up my file to get the history (parents, etc...) and give me valuable information. Our dog is beautiful and we constantly get compliments on him. When I'm ready for another Golden, this is where I will go. Good luck! I know it's a difficult decision.
