hi all, i am taking my 15 mo old to the allergist based on a rec from his ent. what should i expect? what kind of questions should i be sure to ask? we think he is having milk difficulty and took him off of it on advice from a pediatrician who is a friend of the family and it has worked really well. but he seemed to have a mysterious and scary allergic reaction in the car one day so that is actually why i made the appointment.

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
I took my daughter for allergy testing when she was 2 (she's 4 now), and our allergist is very thorough. He asked us about family history of allergies, whether food-related or environmetal. He also asked us questions about our house, when it was built, was it brick, the kind of heating that we use, the flooring, etc. The doctor will also ask about his current diet. If you have some time before the appointment, keep a food diary to help you track and remember what he eats and whether he has any strange reactions. Also very helpful to bring some Benadryl (but don't give him any within 24 hrs before you go to the doctor, allergy tests won't work). The Benadryl comes in handy if he gets a skin prick test. My daughter ended up with huge hives after the testing. The size of the hives indicates the severity of the allergy, and in her case it's quite severe. Since your child is only 15 months, he may actually get a blood test, so prepare yourself for that. I hope this helps and good luck to you.

They will probably do either a skin scratch test or blood test for milk allergies. They will also prbably ask you about the reaction that the baby had and if there is any family history of allergies. As I was told by an allergist the skin test is about 91-97% accurate.

I took my daughter at 13 months, they did a scratch test on her back....It was not bad at all,she did cry a bit but it was not bad at all the results are with in 15 min, so no waiting days to find out what is going on. The Dr asked all the questions, family history, home, eating habits and what not so I am sure you asking any questions he will most likey aleady asked.
Good Luck@

I took my son at 2yrs after a summer of on again off again rashes. We kept a food diary, but did not change any eating habits, since there weren't any breathing issues. Dr took a full history including extended family with allergies. Since he was 2, the dr did a scratch tests. Worst part was him keeping completely still with the patches on his back.

Good luck, hope all works out
