We are surprising our 3 kids with a trip to Disneyland next month.
Do you have any tips or suggestions to share? It has been years since I've been there!
Also the day we get there we will have free time (but not enough for Disney) to do something - ideas??
We also have one other open day to do something else (thinking Seaworld or Legoland??).
Do you have an inexpensive car rental suggestion?

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

On the day you get there: you could just walk around Downtown Disney, shopping, eating, catch a movie, etc. And, you're really not far from beaches and some really great shopping malls.
Your extra day: Go to Sea World (you do realize it's a 2-hour drive?). It is SO much more fun than Legoland. We went to Legoland once, and I just didn't find it to be a day's worth of entertainment, nor was it worth the money. We never went back. Whereas we could go to Sea World over and over again and always have fun!
Food and drink at Disneyland is EXPENSIVE!!! We always take water bottles with us (buy some souvenir ones the day before) and fill them up all day to avoid buying drinks. I also pack snacks in my backpack to munch on all day while in line. We usually pack a picnic meal and put it in a locker and go to the picnic area for lunch or dinner. And, then we buy the other meal.
If your kids are like mine, you may find yourself stressed and broke over the "buy-mes" and "get-mes". My son just wants to eat his way through the park, while my daughter wants to shop her way through! I found my peace by giving each one a set amount of money to spend for the day - they could spend it on food, gifts, whatever; but that's all they get!

Enjoy and have a blast!!!!

Do you mean the one in CA or FL......I've only been to FL

Do Sea World on your extra day - I personally like it more than the Magic Kingdom anyway.
Legoland area (forget what it's called) can be done during free time. It's mostly just a bunch of shops you can walk around and then let the kids play at legoland for a bit and maybe grab dinner.
Have fun! We're thinking of going for Christmas break.........we took the kids to Magic Kingdom and Seaworld 4 yrs ago.

Both Sea World and Legoland are fun, so it depends what your kids are into. Legoland will be closer to Disneyland if time is a factor, but it's so much better to go on a weekday. I feel like Legoland does not do a good job moving people through their lines. But it's more ride oriented, whereas Sea World is more about the shows and exhibits. Sea World is probably less expensive, and they have meal deals that can make eating there more affordable.

As far as Disneyland, a few things. If your kids like any of the characters, consider checking out the character breakfasts. They're expensive but it's all you can eat. At the very least, you and your husband would likely be able to eat enough that you wouldn't need a very big lunch for yourselves. And if you do it early enough, you get to go inside the park before everyone else, which is kind of cool.

If any of your kids are too little to ride any of the rides, you can take advantage of the Parent Swap program that lets you and your husband take turns riding the rides without having to stand in line twice.

We usually like to head to the back of the park and make our way forward in order to avoid the crowds, since most people will be doing the reverse. I believe there is also an app that you can download that will help you maximize your Disney trip by downloading wait times for rides and things.

The other thing that we always do at Disney is to get a pineapple whip from the Dole snack shack near the Tiki Room. It's apparently the only place other than the Dole factory in Hawaii where they sell them.

We always stay at the Park Vue Inn which is right across the street from the park. You can totally just walk, which is convenient if you need to go back for naps. Also, they let you park there for free.

If you walk around Downtown Disney and want to eat, the Rainforest Cafe is always popular. Try to see if you can make reservations ahead of time, because otherwise the wait can get pretty long.

I know it can be expensive, but if it's not too much more, you could also consider checking out California Adventure on your first day. There won't be a ton of stuff for your little kids to do there, so you could see pretty much all you'd want in a few hours. When we went, all my son wanted to do was ride the Toy Story Midway Mania game. We did that three or four times.

Have so much fun!

My family truly enjoys Seaworld! It seems to be calming to the children to see the animals.
Not been to Legoland, but heard great things about it!

OK, I'm going to throw in a promo for Lego Land. Do you have boys? Do they enjoy Leogs? They will really like Lego Land. What I liked about it was that when we went with a 7 year old and a 3 year old they had plenty of rides for both kids. They even have some of basically the same ride right next to each other geared for the different age groups. If you head toward San Diego you'll get some wonderful views of the beach. Downtown Disney is fun to spend some time. Have a great trip, we LOVE Disneyland!!

I live here in AZ, so we drove to Disneyland four years ago to surprise our son, who was 3 at the time, with that. He loved it! We stayed at the Annabella Hotel. I absolutely love that hotel! The rates are reasonable, great service and you can take the shuttle bus to disney and back. The hotel is about all I can advise you on.
Have a great trip! What a wonderful time for the whole family. :-D
