Going Swimming with a Cold?

My son (5) and daughter (14) take swimming lessons with a group of other kids at the pool. DS has a runny nose and a cough but otherwise is fine, he also had a fever last night but now it is down. DD has a bad cold, with constant sneezing and occasional coughing. She does not have a fever. The problem is my kids have a swimming competition two days later, so they have to go to swimming class today. On the other hand, I feel terrible at thought that some other kids might get sick. Is it fine for DS and DD to go to swimming class today? This is quite a dilemma.

What can I do next?

They would have to skip. You run the risk of getting others sick and the best thing for a bad cold is rest. Swimming is very strenuous and hard on the body and I don't see how they would even feel like getting in! Yuck! There will be more meets and I don't think its worth making everything worse, you know? Hope everybody feels better!

Please, my son is a swim instructor and swim coach, take some pity on him and don't expose him to any more sickness. He's had enough of being sick. The entire swim staff has been taking a beating. Call Coach and tell him you are keeping them home to get better for the swim meet on Saturday. Thanks!

Its fine for the child without the fever but keep the child with the fever home for at least 24 hours with no fever.
---As much as it sounds gross to get cleaned out in the pool, it really does help and I highly doubt they will give the cold to someone else that way. Usually people expose others to their illness before they even know they are coming down with something. Send them and just make sure you give them extra vitamins and TLC.

No honey, they are sick, so because of them and others, keep them home.

I wouldn't have them swim. Not only will the expose others (germs love that warm, damp environment), but they could probably use the two days to rest before their meet. I get that you want them to practice before they compete, but seriously... if they don't know what they're doing by now, they aren't going to learn it today :) Let them rest and be fully recovered on Sunday!

Hope this helps.

No, you use your mommy brain and that means that they stay home. No one wants to see a runny nose and sneezing at a practice. Yuck. I know you want them to compete but this is part of it and they have to stay out.

How would you feel if you infect the rest of the team? Not a good thing especially two days from the event.

Common sense, they stay home.

I have a daycare child who's sister has bronchitis with a fever and they have kept both children home all week and I am very thankful for that!! Even though my own student is sick, she's not spreading her sister's germs to everyone else. Smartest parents to boot! Bronchitis is going around like crazy this year! Keep 'em home!

My thought turned to the fact that colds respiratory in nature (sneezing, coughing) could also make it harder to breath normally and abnormal breathing and swimming are not a great combination:)

At 14, though, I bet DD wants to compete and has trained long enough she knows what she can and can't do. She is fever free, let her give it a shot. Her times may be waaaay off. I'd let my 14 yo, but not the fevery 5 yo and I'd use that as my justification - LOL.

Colds happen, most are allergy's and not infectious. I also think that if it is a cold then I would give some cough syrup and see if it had the effect I wanted on the DD. She may need to take some sudafed to get the goo out of her nose so it won't keep draining into her lungs.

I would let them go.

with a fever it would be TERRIBLY irresponsible of you to subject anyone to your child with in 24hrs of the fever.

And when you are in doubt, chances are your thoughts are wrong more or less - so, I would have the kids obstain from practice and possibly the meet.
