Hi Ladies,
Was wondering what is the going rate for night time babysitter. My husband works nights Tue-Sun and now that our son is 15mo I would like to occasionally go out and have some adult time with my girlfriends. I basically would need the sitter to be an adult in the house in case my son wakes up. I would put him to bed and then go out. Looking for someone to sit for 2-4 hrs depending on what I am doing, starting at about 9pm. I know the late start time probably will make a difference, but just wanted to get an idea of what is a good average rate.

Seven an hour, if i may add, P., it's none of my business, but I don't think the late nights while your husband is working is a very good idea, But none of my business, I'm 52 and that's what I would tell my daughter and my daughter in law if they were making those kinds of plans, but none of my business. 15 months is such a fun age. I use a couple of different sitters and pay either $10 or $12 per hour. They are certified childcare providers from my baby's daycare center so they have training on choking, CPR, First Aid, etc. (a requirement for me until my kids are at least 3). You might be able to find a high school student for a lower rate... give your local high school a call to see if they have a list of sitters. Have fun!

P.,
I am a Director of a preschool and my advice is $10 - $12 an hour depending on the person's experience. Make sure they are CPR/First Aid Infant/Toddler certified because you want someone that could help your child if he's choking or not breathing (they should have a card for it). I just want to remind you that you get what you pay for! So, if you only are willing to pay $7 an hour, you're not going to get someone that's very good! Hope that helps.

In addition to what the others said:
Be SURE you do a background check on anyone you have in your home and to watch your baby! AND that they KNOW how to care for a baby... and as you said, yes, what if he wakes up when you are out? Will the Sitter know what to do? AND what about feedings if he wakes at night, especially at growth spurts? Does he take a bottle?

In my area/State, it is $10/hour and up.

all the best,
Susan
