Going from the Crib to the Bed.

Hi. I have a wonderful 28 month old little girl who is still in her crib. She has not climbed out or acted like she wanted to unless I am in the room with her and she is ready to get out. She will do something like put her leg up on the rail, but she really hasn't made any attempts to get out on her own. However, she has climbed IN her crib to get her favorite stuffed animal. She has only done this twice with her Daddy and I looking on. It's quite entertaining. Her Daddy is 6'4 and I am 5'7, so she is tall for her age and is able to climb in or out if desired. Should I start thinking about putting her in her twin day bed?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I have decided not to transfer her to her big girl bed yet. She is still in her crib and doing fine. It's been almost a month since my first post and she still has not tried to climb out (even though she could.) I believe that I will keep her in her crib until she shows me that she is ready to make the "move" which has definitely not happened yet. Thanks again everyone.

She's ready for the "big girl bed" for sure. And you and your husband are ready to rock the night away while she sleeps in it. Schedule bedtime, after bathtime, after goodnight stories, etc. and she'll get in to a good pattern...
Blessings

She is over two, tall, and climbs into and out of her crib: The crib must be removed. She could get hurt...break a leg or arm, fall on her head...break her collar bone like my second daughter did falling off the couch and that wasn't a long way down like a crib. I'm not trying to scare you but you need to put safety first and she is not safe if she can easily get into and out of her crib. Dismantle the crib today and put her mattress on the floor. My 2 1/2 year old sleeps on his crib mattress on the floor. No need to go out and buy her a twin bed yet...her crib mattress is just fine.

My son is 2.5 and is still in a crib as well.. He will hang one foot over but not actually climb out (thank gosh). I am waiting as long as I can before I put him in a "big boy" bed.. He doesn't mind his crib at all, it's just when I come in that he wants to get out.. I feel a lot more at ease knowing he's still in his crib... I vote to wait as long as you can :0)

i just changed my son to a big boy bed and he is 3 1/2. he has done very well with the transition and i am glad i waited so long. he too never tried to climb out and could of very easily...he has always been 95% for height and weight and is very strong. i vote for wait, the older she is the more you can reason with her and she will actually understand. good luck!

all kids are differnt. both my girls tramsitioned well to a twin bed. by the way, i think toddler beds are a waste, why get them use to it and have to go to a twin soon?
My oldest was 2 1/2 before going to a twin. With a new baby when she was 2 I was afraid to have too many changes so I waited. She had always had a twin bed in her room so I think she was comfortable with it and that made it easy for her. We keep the crib in her room for a week or so and then took it down. We also had a bed rail. My youngest was 2 when she went to a twin. She ready before the oldest and had no problems either. I say try it and take your clues from her. Also if she is tall I think she may be getting uncomfortable in the crib. my oldest did at 2 1/2 and she is average height.

It's a personal preference. My first son was transitioned at 13-14 months because his baby sister was on the way and we needed the crib-- but he HATED the crib and was very happy in a bed. My now 2.5 year old is still in his crib and I'm in no rush to get him out. He actually CAN climb out and has a couple of times, but I told him not to because he could get hurt so he stopped!!I like it that he stays in his bed for a half hour or so on weekends and lets me sleep a bit longer, which I know won't happen anymore once he's in a big bed.

almost 2 1/2 year old, she is ready for the big bed. She already knows how to climb in, easy for her to climb out! If your crib allows it, you may want to remove a couple of bars at by the middle/foot of the bed, letting her enough space to get in and out on her own, until you switch her to the big bed. If you have no intent to keep or sell the crib, you can always saw the bars.
Any change you make to her bed, involve her in the change, let her be around when you remove the bars or replace the bed, let her choose where she wants to put the new bed (if possible) or simply choose which colors of sheets etc... It's a big change to suddenly be in a big bed. She may feel lost, so don't change everything when she is at gran'ma for ex., thinking it will be a great surprise when she returns- it won't!
This is what we have done for our daughter, remove 3 or 4 bars from the crib, she learned how to get in and out, and to stay in her bed when it's bedtime (this one may take some time!!!!), she felt so "free", she was so happy!!! and we switched to a twin bed when she was almost 3. We waited that long because we were moving and having a new baby and we wanted her to keep her reference marks until we got settled in the new house. But she is tall also for her age, and the crib was really too small for her! don't forget to put pillows on the floor (or a guard rail for the 1st few weeks), keep a night light as she may get up in the night... and make sure nothing is on the way from her bedroom to yours as she may want to come and visit also!!!! (soon she will be looking for the restroom/potty at night)
this is a big step for her and the parents!!!
Have fun!
