I read that GoFund Me takes a pretty big cut. I'd rather just give a check or cash directly.
Does anyone else think the gofundme pages are getting excessive? I just saw on FB that my friend put up a gofundme page for her son to go to camp this summer, she & her husband are asking for almost $3,000 he is almost 17 and he's never had a job. I know her son & parents (our kids go to school together) Do kids not have jobs anymore? I remember when i was that age if i wanted something i payed for it... not saying he needs to pay for all of it but why have other ppl pay for you to have fun?

I think it is over used tremendously. Doing this for a camp to me is an insult to people who are truly in need. A kid going to camp is not "truly in need" in my opinion. The beauty about this is you don't have to participate in the craziness!
I had a friend who had her identity stolen and every month all her disability check was gone on the day she got it. Her bills would go through that were automatic and she'd have hundreds of dollars of overdraft fees. She ended up changing accounts, pin numbers almost every month, etc... Her bank is in a class action lawsuit as having employees that were doing this, or something similar to those words.
Since she's on disability they don't allow her to make an extra penny. She set up a go-fund-me page trying to get help to pay her rent and other bills so that she wouldn't be out on the street. She couldn't put her name on it or she might have been caught. So it was a help a disabled person that got their identity stolen sort of thing. She didn't get many, if any, donations but she was very desperate. If I'd have had any money to give her I would have done it but we were struggling ourselves.
Sometimes they are much needed. Sometimes they are for silly things that parents need to buck up and pay for or tell the kid no, they can't afford it.
I did one one time and had exactly how much I needed in about an hour. My father in law gave me half of it and two other people did the rest. It was a blessing. A fund raiser fell through at the last minute and I didn't have cash to pay for a dance competition that was in a few days.
If it had been something that was my own fault/choice/etc...then I wouldn't have done it at all.
I have seen many go fund me pages for things that seem inappropriate. I have contributed to only those where I know the situation is dire, like paying for medical or funeral expenses. This request seems like you are being asked to pay for her son's vacation.
