My 9 yr old has had a sore throat and cough, with 101-100 fever for almost 48 hrs now. I cant decide if I should take her to the Dr. or not. Her lymph nodes are not swollen and she doesnt seem to have white spots on her tonsils, they are kinda spottchy though...Im am just trying to decide if we should go before the holidays....or wait and see what happens between now and Tues...the after hours clinic we use is open until 5pm today and closed thru to Tues....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, so we finally decided to go to the Dr. Our first try was Mercy South. After finding out the wait was 3-4 HOURS, yes hours. I choose to run her to Menorah...They do not offer urgent care...Oh what fun it is to be a parent and run around with a miserable child! So we finally just thought we would try Walgreens clinic. And it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be! The nurse practioner did a strep test, it came back negative..Yippee at least for now. But she thought it would be better to treat her with anti-biotics to be on the safe side. I have pros and cons on that idea...so we will see..She is still running a fever, sore throat is mildly better, cough is deeper and tighter but not very often. Every place we did go told us all kinds of "bugs" are going around right now..including the FLU. So please everyone take care of those little one you all have. PS I keep hand sanitizer in the car to use when we run errands, just an idea to pass along.

I just wanted to add watch out for those shopping carts! They are bacteria carriers.

My son is 5 and I still carry a few wipes with me so I can wipe them suckers down.

My two year old is just getting over the same thing...fever for 2 days, sore throat, cough and runny nose. We took her to the Dr. after 2 days, but she gags on her medicine and can't keep it down. She started getting better that day (no more fever)even without her antibiotic, so I've kept her on cough medicine and she's consistantly improving. So I'd say, wait one more day and see if the fever gets any better and definitely keep her on some sort of cold/cough medicine.

Also, I started coming down with it as well, and taking Airborne 2-3 times a day has done a pretty good job of warding it off....I never got anything more than the slightest sore throat for 1/2 a day.

I would have taken her just so I would know whether or not she should be around family and friends during the holiday. It's best not to infect everyone

YES! You should. It sounds like she has Strep Throat and she must be miserable. My daugther had the same symptoms and Strep is going around like crazy. She got a pennicillin shot and was better withing 24 hours.

I spoke to the Ask-A-Nurse help line last month regarding fevers. The nurse told me to medicate a fever if it is over 101* and to seek medical attention if it reaches 103* or continues for longer than 24 hours. Call your doc!

Follow YOUR instincts. The doctor's might not be able to give him anything to make it go away but they most likely can give him something to make him more comfortable. No sense in being miserable. You can go to any after-hours clinic in town. Just because you use a particular health system doesn't mean you need to go to their after-hours only. If it's something that needs to be taken care of right away but not an emergency and mine is closed, I go to Brookside Immediate Care. I swear they are ALWAYS open. Even most holidays. So try not to sweat it too bad. Just give them a call if you think he needs a doctor before Tuesday. You might luck out and they will prob be open :)

Most doctors are not getting excited about a 100 or 101 degree fever any more, sad to say. You can choose to take her to a doctor, or you can treat her as naturally as possible.
Elderberry syrup can be bought at all the natural food stores and will deal with any virus she may have. Tylenol for the fever and discomfort, and lots of liquids. For the Vit C and just the comfort, either get her a tea for colds, or just make a warm lemonade, don't use honey to sweeten, she is too young.
I will available today, if you need any further advice

what are they gonna do for him? A fever is a sign your body is fighting an infection if you hinder a fever you prolongue the sickness. if the fever is too high, 104 then put him in bath and use washclothes. I would make him comfortable and tuff it out. If it would make you feel better you could take him to the dr.

The way I do it with my lil boy is take their temp. if it's high I try to give them some medicine for the fever and wait. If it gets better then I don't worry so much but if it stays high or gets higher take them to the doctor's or the E.r.
