Hi everyone! I am making a dinner for my husband on Saturday. I have been off my feet for about 3 weeks and he's had to take care of our daughter and the entire household. I want to tell him thank you now that i'm able to be on my feet more. I am making sweet potato gnocchi with maple sage cinnamon butter. Never made it before but he's always wanted to try it. What i'm wondering is - Is this a side dish or a main dish? I hate to sound ignorant but like I said i've never made it before and i'm just curious.

Thanks for the help :)

P.S. If it's a main dish - what do you guys make as a side?

What can I do next?

Hi! Definitely main dish, once they start eating the gnocchi they aren't going to care about anything else! Make some salad too, 'cos it's good for you. Hmmm, I wonder if I have any more sweet potatoes stashed away????

Hi! Did you get this recipe from the Hyvee magazine? I'm only asking because we had something very similar on Thanksgiving. If I remember, it was super heavy on the cinnamon (which, I love cinnamon, so it was odd to think this recipe over did it.) You might want to sample it as you go to test out how much spice you like.

It was a side item for us. It would have been way to sweet and starchy to have it as our main course. Of course, it was on Thanksgiving, so we had it with turkey and loads of other stuff. I would suggest you make it as a side item with a green salad and then pick up one of those rotisserie chickens at the store. That would be a super easy and balanced meal for you to make. Gnocchi is really easy to cook (if you're getting the store bought kind), so hopefully this won't be too taxing on you since you've been off your feet for a while.

Good luck!
Hilary

You can serve it as a main dish...but it would be light of course for some..like my husband. Just like pasta dishes, contrary to what others have said, bread compliments gnocci well. I always do it (gnocci) as a side. I like to make steak or pork chops and sometype of steamed veggie too.

In Italy it's a side dish served with meat or fish. You can serve it either way, as a side or a main dish.

I like it as a main course with a salad on the side. Adding bread to the meal seems like overkill.

And, the recipe sounds yummy, but sweet potato with maple in the sauce might be too sweet. I'd suggest just a brown butter/sage sauce (with grated parmigiano). The salt of the sauce should balance out the sweet of the sweet potato.

Buon apetito!

Main dish with vegetable side and/or salad. You don't have to have much because it is a very filling dish. Good luck with it!

It can be either a main or side dish. I always serve it as a main dish, usually with salad and fresh bread (and lol on the slam for suggesting this ... I only mentioned it because my husband's a big eater and likes bread with anything Italian). Keep in mind that you don't have to serve a lot of gnocchi ... a little can be very filling.

Sweet potato gnocchi sounds wonderful!
