Glycerin Suppositories for Constipation?

One of my little boys has a terrible time (not) pooping in the potty. He has a tendency to not go for 2-3 days at a time then (I think) cannot hold it in anymore and goes in his pants. He is 4 1/2 and hardly ever poops in the potty. He will sit on the potty for up to an hour at a time and does nothing. Then, within 30 minutes or so of getting off the potty, he poops in his pants. Yes, he eats fruits & vegetables, he drinks enough water, etc. I called the doctor and spoke to the nurse. She said that it sounds like a learned behavior. This is what I suspected. She recommended putting him on the potty for 20 minutes every time after he eats. I am doing that. She also recommended giving him a glycerin suppository to help him go. Everything I've read says that it should work within 15 minutes to an hour. Well, he's been sitting on the potty for an hour and NOTHING! I know that when he gets off he WILL go in his pants sometime today. HELP!

What can I do next?

I dont have this exact prob. since we havent started Potty training yet.

But I do agree that it is a learned behavor.

The prob is not really constipation is that of he is holding it until he cant hold it anymore. He isnt ready to go poopy in the potty and is holding it.

Before I would go through the tramatic experience of a supository I would go with Miralax.

My DD has been on it since she was a year old and has been on it everyday since for a year now. She has rabbit like poo and has constipation issues herself just like mom.

I would go find some potty training books on this issue. I have read about this I think in the "everything you need to know about potty training" book I found it at Barns and Noble.

Good luck.

i would ask your dr about using a small amount of miralax in his breakfast drink everyday for a couple weeks.

My son had the same problem. We gave him the child suppositories but they didn't always work. The pediatrician then told me to give him Miralax (this was before it was over the counter). It worked great! Ask your doctor if you can use that.

I gave mine a little bit of prune juice daily to keep him regular. You could use orange juice as well. I now give him a magnesium supplement powder after dinner called natural calm for kids that I get at a vitamin store. Go light on the magnesium at first if you use it or you will have the opposite problem.")
He has now associated discomfort on the potty from going potty. I have a friend that had this problem and it was a BUGGER to get through. Answer: Always keep him regular to avoid any more pain on the potty and hopefully it will become a thing of the past.

my dd has issues also. i tried the suppositories and they worked. i also give her dried prunes to eat every so often, especially if she has had bananas! the dried prunes are MUCH better than prune juice and kids are more likely to eat them for a snack. as for having accidents in his pants, i would watch him like a hawk as soon as you get him off the potty. don't let him out of your sight and i bet you can tell the minute he starts to go and then you can get him into the bathroom (hopefully). :)

My son had the same problem! I decided that he needed a little help with going to the bathroom. I wanted to make sure that he was getting enough fiber. I started using the Melaleuca fiber wise cereal bars and in I would also add fiber con to his dinner. Just sprinkle a little and mix in whatever. This has really helped. Because he is getting extra fiber his stool is looser and doesn't hurt coming out. If you have any questions for me let me know. We have had nights where he was sweating and couldn't walk to the bathroom because he hadn't gone in three or four days. Giving him the extra fiber helped, because it made it more difficult to hold in. I also started using all fresh fruits and vegetables. I think they are healthier.
