Glucose Screening Test - FAILED! Score of 192. Yikes!

I was originally scheduled for my doctor's appt this Friday, so thinking nothing of it, I ate a chocolate croissant as a second breakfast. Called the OB's office and found out I had to reschedule Friday's appointment, so I decided to try for that same afternoon (after my chocolate croissant). I ate a fairly healthy lunch, drank my "orange drink" and went right in. Just got a call that my result was 192 and I have to come back for my 3 hour tolerance test. I also failed the screening test with my son but passed the 3 hr beautifully. Anyone have a similar experience? Could the morning chocolate croissant have caused the score to jump up so high?
Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all who responded. Wanted to let you know that I heard back from my OB today and I passed all four tests (my levels were normal), so I don't have GD. She's not sure if the croissant would have caused hte levels to be up so high for the one hour screenign test but I did fine on the tolerance test, so woohoo!

A chocolate croissant is not going to give you high blood sugar unless you have an issue (i.e. gestational diabetes.) 192 is fairly high...way above average, and DEFINITELY in the diabetic range. I wish you the best of luck, and hope your three hour test comes back okay!

It's not the amount of sugar you eat.... it's how your body processes it that causes the jump in blood sugar. I mean, yes, the more sugar you eat the more insulin your body produces to counteract..... but if your body could handle the chocolate croissant within a 'normal' range, then 2 wouldn't be an issue.

do the 3 hour by the letter and see what they say.

Good luck.

I always failed the one hour. WIth three kids. It did not matter if I fasted or ate doughnuts. I always passed the 3 hour as a whole but the first hour glucose was out of normal range (high).

Follow instructions what they gave you to do from now till then & follow the directions for the 3 hr test.I have always passed mine never had to do a repeat so unsure what the details are for the 3 hr test. It's not the amount of sugar as much as your body processes the sugar as a repeat of others have said.Eat better drink water & watch how much sugar your eating/drinking combined till you know exactly if your dealing with gestational diabetes

With my first pregnancy, I failed the one hour test and passed the three hour test. With my second child, I fasted (even though I wasn't supposed to) and I passed the one hour test. With my third child, I ate a big bag of Cheetos the night before the test and not surprisingly, I failed the one hour test. I think I was in the 190's too.

Pretty much by my third pregnancy, I was tired of being poked and prodded. I told my OB that I respectfully declined her offer to give me the three hour test, and that I would eat a diabetic diet for the remainder of my pregnancy. She pressed me for more testing or daily blood sugar testing, and I just told her that I was not going to do any of it. I was nauseous and vomiting the whole nine months of the pregnancy, and I was not about to drink another sugar drink and sit around for three hours. Baby #3 was quite large (9 lbs 6 oz) but otherwise healthy. I'm healthy too, and I don't have any health issues.

Yes, the morning croissant probably had a huge impact on your numbers. You will most likely pass the three hour test, but you should probably go low-carb and low-sugar from here on out anyway. Good luck to you!

Right now, I don't think it is as important to find out which food made your sugar so high, as it is to find out if your sugar has a tendency to be high -- no matter what you eat. I guess what I'm saying is that everyone experiences high blood sugar at some point. But, if this is happening to you frequently, you have a problem that needs addressing. For instance, let's say you and a friend each ate a chocolate croissant for breakfast. Your friend's body may be able to adjust for the extra sugar/carb by the time it's time to get tested. Your's may not, making you more glucose intolerant than your friend. I don't mean to be long-winded. But, I think that the test is administered to find out how your body reacts to your "normal" eating habits. And, if it doesn't do such a good job, your eating habits or your body have to be adjusted in some way. More testing is great. An AC1 is also a good indicator of your blood sugar levels over time, not just on one day. If you do have some glucose intolerance, the good thing is that it can be controlled. That's when you get into looking more closely at how certain foods react with your body.
Sorry, i didn't realize you were pregnant when I first read this. I have had gestational diabetes and I know that I have insulin issues. I know that I'm not on top of my health, like I should be. But I do pay attention, sometimes, to what and how I eat. You'll be alright. I've seen people walking around, looking good, with numbers in the 400. Right now, just follow the advice of the doctors, for the health of your baby. And don't fret too much about it. A lot of things go haywire when we're pregnant. GL

I failed the first on at least one of my kids, and I'm sure I fasted like I was supposed to, so whether or not that croissant did it probably is a moot point (especially since you failed for your first child also). Fingers crossed that your 3-hour turns out fine like it did the first time. After 10 years I can honestly say the only thing I remember about the 3-hour test now is how fast I could find the nearest McDonalds when it was over!

Does memory fail me, or aren't you supposed to fast before the test? If you didn't, your results are likely invalid. One in three women "fails" the one hour test, but only about 4% of women have gestational diabetes. Good luck

i just got a call from my dr saying my was 145, not high but i still need to do the 3 hr test. I'm not sure if the chocolate croissant could cause that, maybe ask your dr? i fasted before mine and was still 5 over the limit...
