Glasses Won't Stay Up

my daughter has glasses but not much of a bridge to keep them up so they are constantly slipping down to the edge of her nose. aside from the 'lovely' strap to put around her head, nothing works. we have the hooks that go on her ears but in order to make her glasses stay up, we'd have to make them so tight that they hurt her ears. has anyone out there found a product that fixes this problem?

--they have adjusted the glasses several times with the heat and bending, which seems to work at the time but somehow it is always falling down a day after.

-the temples have been shortened as much as possible already. we could make it shorter but then she complains because it's too tight behind her ears.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thank you everyone for your input. it sounds like we just need to try out some new frames. it was our first time buying glasses and no one suggested any certain pair. my daughter loved the spongebob ones so that's what we got.

Rikki is right. the frame style is critical. When we got my daughter's glasses, the woman helping us specifically steered us away from certain styles because of her small nose bridge. We went to the Factoria Eye Clinic in Bellevue. You might ask Nikki where she went too. If you have the wrong frames, nothing will help. (You might ask the place you got them for at least a partial refund or a replacement if they suggested that you buy the wrong style.)

One thing that makes a HUGE difference for me is the material that sits on my nose. For me, if the material is too hard, they will slip. You might try some with nosepads if the current ones dont. The pair I currently wear came with really hard nose pads that didn't stay up, so I asked them to change out the nosepads. The ones that they have (I go to lens crafters) for replacements are much softer and stay up better on my face. If your daughters glasses have nosepads, you might try changing them out to different ones before buying an entirely new set of frames...or something to keep in mind with the new frames.

I wear a compression stocking and use a medical adhesive to keep it up. It is a light adhesive and washes off very easily with water. You could try a small amount on the bridge of her nose. (There's quite a strong alcohol odor when it first goes on, but goes away quickly as it dries.)

The one I buy is "It Stays". The price varies depending on where you get it, but it is around $9.00 for 2oz. It is at medical supply stores. Call before you go though, some medical supplies are more equipment (beds and such).

I've worn glasses since I was 8 and only figured out they could actually FIT with my last pair.

I agree with the first responder, they should be able to reshape them to fit right to her head and ear (without pinching!), which means they have no room to move.

Second, though, it seems like there used to be little rubber or silicone tubes that fit around the earpieces to make them have traction ... maybe ask at a drugstore?

Any good eye doctor will adjust them to the wearers face for free. Did they measure her face before they ordered them so they got the right size? Oh and you can get non slip pads that go on the nose pieces so they don't slip so much. Encouraging her to wash the oils off the bridge of her nose will help some too and wipe sweat away after recess and PE. Oh and does it bother her? My cousin intentionally wears her glasses low which would drive me nuts.

You can take them back to where you got them and they will adjust them for free, anytime. They use heat to remold the frames to your head shape. I get mine done about twice a year. It takes about three minutes to have the heating and fitting done.

You don't say how old your daughter is. The head strap may be the most effective way to keep them up if she's a toddler/preschooler. If she's older, the pads that rest on the bridge of her nose can have non-slip grip pads attached (stuck) to them. They're a self-adhesive type of pad, like you would put in the heels of your shoes to keep them from slipping. Also the earpieces could be made out of flexible materials, like a covered spring type wire, that provides the support she needs with a minimal amount of discomfort. New glasses and earpieces aren't comfortable until you tet use to them. To persist is to achieve. Best of luck!

Have you taken her to her Optician to see if maybe the temples aren't too long for her face or having them bend the temples with their hot salt (?) so they are at a different angle? (My Dad is a licensed Optician for over 35 years and has taught me there are things they can do to manipulate the frame some to help with these issues. That is the only thing (other than the straps) that I can think of. Good luck!!!

Our daughter has Down Syndrome, so she pretty much has no bridge to her nose at all. This limited our selection of glasses to 3 pairs. :o( However, we did go with the style of frame that they suggested, and we have not had any problems. Maybe you need a different style?
Good luck!

we have the same problem, it drives me nuts. I have had them adjusted several times in the last two months and nothing works. My daughter likes them to sit lower when I push them up she say it is too high on her nose so I am learning to just leave her alone unless they slide down to the end of her nose.

I am going to check your responses later for other ideas though. Good Luck

Sounds like it's time for another pair of glasses regardless if these ones are new or not. Go with a bigger frame regardless of what they say. I had that same problem, and the bigger frame solved the problem.

Take them and your daughter back to the eye store and have them fitted again.
