Go online and google the model number. If it brings up sites that sell parts you are probably in luck. With any luck you can also look up the exact part and price.
I will call an appliance repair shop on Monday, but in the meantime does anyone know if the burner on a glass top stove can be repaired? Is it cost effective to do so? I have a 16 1/2 year old glass top GE stove/oven. One of the burners went out this weekend. My stove and microwave are the only original appliances in our home that haven't been replaced yet and we were hoping to get a little more time out of them, but I also don't want to spend a lot of money on the repair of an appliance that is possibly nearing or at the end of its lifespan.
Not a typo. It is over 16 years old. We like to hang on to cars, appliances, mowers, our pets, etc. as long as they still function. We had a dog that made it to 17 1/2 and a mower that made it almost 17 years too. (-: (Not that appliances, mowers and pets are comparable, but we specialize in longevity.)
I was able to get a hold of an appliance repairman who answers his phone on Sundays. The stove has already exceeded its expected life span. He said we might be able to repair it for $250, but the computer could go out at any time. He also didn't know if the part would be available, which was verified by my difficulty trying to Google the model number. He recommended a Whirlpool. I also spoke with an appliance saleswoman and ranges have never been rated for energy efficiency because people use them so differently it is hard to compare. Looks like I'll be shopping, to my husband's dismay. Thanks everyone.
More on brands: so the appliance repair person recommended Whirlpool (although not looking good in Consumer Reports), the saleswoman recommended GE and my parents who recently went appliance shopping recommended Kenmore. Both Kenmore and GE do well in Consumer Reports. Any other thoughts?

Cindy to the best of my knowledge - they will have to replace the entire glass top. I don't know how much that will cost. I would google the make and model and see how much the part costs.
You might be able to get a new stove for the same price, more energy efficient and better. I don't know. I don't have a glass top stove.
GOOD LUCK!!
If you can get the model number you can Google it and there may be parts available.
We were thinking of purchasing a very high end stove, but the glass was cracked.. the replacement was very high. So we are going to purchase a new stove.
FYI.. GE appliances have been great for our inlaws and my husbands grandparents.. They use their same appliances for over 10 years and they always have had GE.. Even at the lake house.. The only reason they replaced those is because they were all brown and they wanted stainless!
You can buy the top. If you have a home warranty, they will pay for it.
My sister did this and found that she was able to get a new stove for the same price as the replacement glass top.
They can be repaired and it is not hard to do. If your stove is over 16 years old (unless that is a typo) I would consider getting a new one. The newer models use a lot less energy.
