Glass Dolls and 4 Year Olds

My daughter is 4 years 3 months old. A friend of ours gave me four very nice boxed dolls (ceramic ones). Inside each doll is on a stand. What is your opinion on giving these to my daughter? Would you give this to your daughter if she was 4 years old? He was going to give them to good will otherwise so it's not like he'll be upset if she plays with them. I was thinking about giving one of them to her and only allowing her to take it out of the box occasionally to play with it under our watch. Is this asking too much of a child her age? Does your daughter have any ceramic dolls? How do you handle them?

I got one from my grandmother when I was 5 years old but wasn't allowed to play with it. It went into a box and I kind of forgot about it. The nice thing about these is that they are on a stand so they can be taken out of the box to admire (or taken off the stand) or left in the box and we can display those in the playroom.

I'm wondering if I should put three of them up and just start with one and see how she reacts, likes it, etc? I don't want to give them all to her but tell her she cannot play with them. To me that is not fair. I should also ask - What age IS appropriate if you think my daughter is too young for them?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

She can be taught how to gently play with them. My girls kept theirs on a shelf and my "rules" were if they were going to play with their special dolls it needed to be on a soft surface, like the bed or on the carpet, no carrying them around the house :)

I used to collect ceramic dolls and my mom and I even went to classes and made ceramic dolls. A month or two ago I was at my moms and got them out, I gave my 6 year old daughter a couple of the ones I made and a couple to my 6 year old niece. My 6 year old niece broke one of the ones I gave her. My daughter hasn't because I put them away in her closet.

I think ceramic dolls are meant to be looked at.

Glass dolls on stands are not meant to be played with but are meant to be displayed. I would take them and put them away for your daughter when she is older and able to understand that. I would think about the age of 8 or 10 would be more appropriate for this. These kinds of dolls are usually collected by adults not children. there is also the possiblity of lead in the paint used on them. I would not allow them to be "played" with

I think 4 is a little young; I'd wait until 6.

Yup. They are meant to be displayed, not played.

NO. Ours was 7 and didn't like playing with dolls. They just sat there, got knocked over at least once a week and eventually were broken beyond repair and we had to replace the carpet. The glass kept working it's way to the top and cutting her feet.

As I type the last one is in the top of the closet with no head from falling off the tall shelf where it was sitting. It just fell, she wasn't even in the room nor was her brother. But she is sleeping on the couch due to having a bed covered with glass shards and the floor on that side is covered still too.
