Its not really a question about age, of course you should use your best judgement, its really about is your child ready. If you find your son is hungry still after feeding formula then you may want to consider supplementing him with some more solid foods like baby cereal, yogert drinks, and other well desolving food items. As far as your question for choking, there is a product I beleive is sold at Babies R US, it is a little mesh baggie with a handel. You put the desolvable food inside and let your baby suck and chew on the entire thing, allowing for peices that break off not to get into his mouth. people also use this for peices of popcycles, banannas, straberries. Of course with all foods, watch your son closely for any reactions to any foods. Aways try and keep new food introduction to one type per day so you can tell what gave a reaction, if any. Please note that I am not a health profesional, and just giving advise from my own experiances and what others have told me. I hope this helps. Oh, and my last daughter was a little piglet she would steal food off others plates around the same age as your son now. So every child is different.
