Giving Oral Antibiotics to a 12 Month Old

My 12 month old has her first ear infection and was prescribed oral antibiotics. We've been giving it to her with a medicine dropper(syringe type), 2 teaspoons twice a day. Does anyone have a trick to getting it down her without physically pinning her down. She tries to spit most of it back out. We still have 15 more doses to give her. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Have you taken it to your local pharmacy to get it flavored? I know those meds taste awful but maybe a little cherry or strawberry flavor will help. I know you can take it to Wal Mart and they will flavor it for a couple of bucks.

If you mix it in juice, just don't put it in orange or lemon juice. For some reason the acidity in those juices changes the effectiveness of some medications. So I was told to do apple or grape juice if I needed to mix in meds.

My little guy had a very strong gag reflex...so, every time I would try to give him medicine he would gag and throw it up. So FINALLY, we tried just giving him a tiny bit at a time at the advice of his pediatrician...it took a while, but he stopped spitting it out. We used a dropper and put it inside his cheek and sat him at about a 75 degree angle...hope this helps!! Good luck, I understand how frustrating this can be!!

When my son got his first ear infection I was still breastfeeding and when he was eating I would squirt a little at a time in the corner of his mouth. That way he would swallow it before he realized what was going on. If you're breastfeeding or if she still takes a bottle that might be an option. Probably will be a little tricky with a bottle since you won't have a free hand. Maybe dad can help. Hope it helps!

Hi L.,
When giving medicine to your daughter aim the medicine dropper or syringe towards her check and squeeze. Soon after before she can spit it out blow in her face which will make her gasp for air and swallow. Little trick my pediatrician taught me. If she is drinking from a cup, spippy cup or straw try using a litlle measuring cup. Since my daughter is now a little older she prefers being like a big girl and drinking from the little medicine cup. Good luck!!!
