No way!
Babies have a LIQUID diet.......
I gave mine some in a sippy cup starting at age 6mo or so just for fun so they could learn to use a sippy cup.

I would say too soon. I didn't start giving my son water until about 6 months, per my ped's recommendation.

I did not give my baby water until around 9 months of age. She didn't really start drinking more than a sip of it at a time until 12 months.

NO NO NO!

Your baby is too young!
An infant should ONLY be getting, breastmilk or Formula. They get hydrated that way, and it is nutritionally by far, the only thing they need.
AND feed baby on-demand, 24/7 day and night.

Get the book "What To Expect The First Year," and, "What To Expect: The Toddler Years."

At your infant's well-baby check ups, your Pediatrician should be informing you of all of these things and you should ask the Doctor.

DO NOT GIVE WATER.
Infants do not, need this.

We gave him a little (with dr.'s ok) at 7 months because we were on vacation in the carribean and it was mighty hot. If I remmeber right, they advise against giving your newborn water because their stomach capacity is so small, it will stave their appetite.

Nope--way too young! 6 months at the soonest.

Giving a baby younger than 6 months old too much water can interfere with his body's ability to absorb the nutrients in breast milk or formula. It can also cause his tummy to feel full, which curbs his desire to feed. (While small sips of water probably won't hurt your baby, it's best to check with his doctor beforehand during those first six months.)

In rare cases, a baby who drinks too much water can develop a condition known as water intoxication, which can cause seizures and even a coma. Water intoxication happens when too much water dilutes the concentration of sodium in the body, upsetting the electrolyte balance and causing tissues to swell.

Why are you giving baby water?

If baby is sick and needs extra fluids, it's probably okay, check with your pediatrician. Babies can actually get TOO MUCH water and get water poisoning.

Unless the child is sick, there is absolutely no need to give a 6 week old water.

WAAY too soon!!!

Regardless if she's eating breastmilk or formula - her water intake is being taken care of. I'd say not to add water until after 8 months of age because truthfully the main source of nutrition of breastmilk or formula is to at least the first year - and water is not necessary or even good for them.

Do not give your baby water. He does not need it and it could potentially harm him. Breast milk or formula is all he needs.

Six weeks is way too early. Talk with your baby's doctor. We started putting water in a sippy cup at six months.

Breastmilk of formula only for the first 6 months -- it's got all the nutrition and liquids they need. Really -- giving them water can fill them up, and then they won't be taking in the nutrition that they need. It can have a very negative effect on their health, particularly if there are any nursing issues. If you think your baby is getting dehydrated, run -- don't walk -- to a pediatrician -- infants dehydrate very quickly.

4 months old I started to give water in sippy cups. My son, who could obviously not use a sippy cup well yet, only got a little taste here and there. Around 6 months, he was doing much better and drinking some water.

when i took my breastfeeding class before my first daughter was born, i asked the question about babies needing water and they told me "no", because my breastmilk had all the baby needed.

Until about 4 months, you provide water by drinking it and giving the breast.

Don't get TOO wrapped up in the exact timing. But it is too early right now. Talk to your pediatrician.

NO - check with your peditrician, but formula or breastmilk only. I would guess water in an emergency for dehydration prevention is ok, but it doesn't have the nutrition they need.

We always gave a 1/2 oz toan ounce before each feeding to help keep them moving nice in the pooping department. Water doesn't hurt especially in the summer months.

I didn't start mine until she was on solids and only when I think she might be a little bound up. Pediatrician said 3 +/- oz are fine at that point, but otherwise they really don't "need" water. Also, if we're out somewhere & she's getting fussy (and it's not really time for her to eat), I'll give her a bottle of water. But with a 6-wk old, it's always time to eat!! :)

My baby got water at about 4 months in when he had hiccups and I wasn't around to nurse. Not even a full ounce. At about 5 months he insisted on drinking from my water bottle, so I let him get his little mouth wet there. He wasn't really getting it into his tummy, though.

6 weeks is way too young to fill his little tummy with anything other than what you're feeding him--milk or formula.

Not until he was entirely on solids, and even then, we went with milk 99% of the time (growing bones, growing brains, mylenization of the nerves).

Babies (except in extremely hot climates -like 120 in the shade, or those with certain rare medical conditions) don't need "extra" water. They're already on a liquid diet. They get their water/hydration via breastmilk or formula.

Infant and adult nutrition is very different, but water consumption is relatively the same. Go on a liquid diet for a day or two (24-48oz of milk or ensure every 2 hours... which is RATIO wise about what babies get per their weight) and tell me how much MORE water you need on top of that. :)

I started that early but only when I saw that my babies were gassy. It helped them burp. I didn't give alot though. Probably only a half an ounce.

Where we live in Texas it is very hot, and the doctor said it was fine to give a baby nursery water, if they got hot, or appeared thirsty.
Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be a good reason to give them water, they need the calories from milk at that age.

I think both of mine were around 6m when I started giving small amounts of water with meals. Formula or breastmilk should be a baby's prime liquid until your pediatrician states otherwise.

Six weeks old is far too young to give water. It's not okay. Your (general you, not specifically you) baby does not need water and in fact, water is a choking hazard right now. It's too thin and has absolutely no nutritional value. Giving your baby water at this age when you should be giving her breastmilk or formula (formula that is properly prepared, exactly as directed) will give your baby all of the fluids she needs.
