A gift card from Wal-Mart, sports store, or his local theater, even a fast-food chain will make a 10 year old happy. He can do his own shopping.
I'm going to a birthday party for an old friend from high schools son next weekend. I haven't seen her since high school, about 6 years ago, & I've never met her son. He's turning 10 & I have no idea what to get him. She said he's into soccer & pretty much any toy. But what do I get him??? Thanx ladies!!!

A Blockbuster gift card might be good. Then he could rent a movie or a game. You could put it in a popcorn box (they have them a Blockbuster) with a soda and a candy bar.
I'm sorry, and maybe it's just me, but why do you have to get him anything?
You haven't seen the mother in about 6 years, and you've never met her 10 year old son. Personally, I wouldn't get him anything but a nice birthday card. If you do feel the need to show up with something, a $10 gift card to Walmart or Target would suffice.
Gift cards are the best invention ever especially once kids get about 9 or 10...maybe even 8...too me little kids love to unwrap something and are generally easier to shop for, but big kids, like to pick out their own and generally want something a little more expensive so it helps if they can pool their money together..
Most 10 yr old boys love leggos.
A Target Gift Card always works! That way they can get sports stuff, or toys or a DVD - really whatever they want.
Ask your friend if her son likes "Bionicles". They are a brand of Lego, and my 16 year-old son LOVED them when he was this boy's age! The cool thing is, they come in their own reusable containers, and most of the sets cost less then $10. If you're not able to get in touch with her before the party, I would have to say the gift card is the best way to go. But since you have not seen the mom in 6 years, and never met her son, please do not feel "obligated" to put a lot of money into the gift. They will appreciate the fact that you came to his party, and got him "something", anyway!
One other mom suggested the candy and popcorn route, but I would advise against that. The reason is that you don't know if the child has food sensitivities or allergies, and so he wouldn't be able to enjoy it, anyway, and that would "ruin" his birthday. (I became diabetic when I was 13, and HATED (still do) when people would buy me stuff I couldn't eat, but they would definitely enjoy themselves at my party eating the food they allegedly bought for *me*!)
Hope this helps, and that you have fun at the party!
Gift certificates (Toys R us, Target, book store)
Science kits or magic kits are really fun for most kids that age!
