O.O.
What field does he work in?
Membership to a museum?
History center?
Historical attraction?
Local art guild?
Coffee table book on a favorite subject?
Are there any books on history about the university of Utah location/area?
Hi Moms -
Sorry not parenting related, but I would like your thoughts on an appropriate 60th birthday gift for my mentor and boss. He has helped me shape my career for 15 years, and has been a great cheerleader and advocate for me. I would love to get him something special (up to $100), but have hit a creativity wall (a gift card is too impersonal). Any suggestions? He loves reading, history, and the University of Utah.
Thanks!!!

People who love to read and who love history are fun to shop for! Antique books are so much fun! Since he mentored you in a particular area of expertise a book about the history of your field would be cool along with a heartfelt letter saying how much he has taught you and how much his life work has contributed to your field... etc.
I like the gift ideas "OnePerfectOne" gave.
Esp the coffee table book & tickets to a museum.
I would add a heartfel written letter from you adding all of the personal
thank you's that have helped you.
Think he already has a Nook/Kindle?
When my boss retired, we chipped in (3 employee company) and got her a Nook (not a Nook tablet, but one of the actual Nooks), a nice case for it, and a gift card for books. She loved it, especially as she planned to do a lot of traveling in her retirement and she could take it with her without lugging a stack of library books on her trips (her husband also enjoyed this part.).
What about something like this:

I do think an antique book would be cool as well.
Who cares if this is not per se a 'parenting question'. You are a parent and you have a question.
Anyway, actually, people who think gift cards are too impersonal are thinking more about themselves and not the recipient.
WE LOVE GIFT CARDS--you get to choose where we go..which restaurant, Wal-Mart, which store, etc. But, wow if given a $100 gift card I would be SO HAPPY but I would NOT want it to be to a book store and YES I am a reader but I buy cheap books at used book stores.
how about an antique map of Utah framed nicely.. since he likes history and loves Utah.. someone with those interests (which happens to be similar to those of my son's) might love something of that nature... for some, this kind of gift might seem dry and boring.. but for a lover of history and a specific state.. might be just the thing.. Oh and when I was in Utah (Zion and Moab) there were these fantastic black and white photos of the place... you could also get something like that.... utah is such a gorgeous state.... hard to go wrong...
