Getting Twin Boys to Sleep in Big Boy Bed

We recently had to move our twin boys to real beds, and now they won't take naps, or sleep through the night. They are only 20 months old so I think they still need to be napping, and I would prefer if they slept in their own room. When they were in their cribs I could just put them down, and they would go to sleep. Now it can take an hour before one of them is a sleep. I haven't been able to get them down for naps at all the past week on my own, and today one of them didn't take one at all with both my husband and I trying to coax them to sleep. I know that they are tired, I just don't know how to get them to sleep. Does anyone have any suggestions that worked for them. I really need to sleep.....

Thanks

I agree with Regina. Why do you say you HAD to put them in big boy beds? I think from my own experience that 20 months is very early for big kid beds. Like Regina said, moving to a new home, and getting new beds are huge transitions for young children. If I were you, I would put those cribs back up, and have those boys taking naps in them this afternoon!!! Hope you get some sleep!

I recently read an article in a parenting magazine about big-kid-beds. I wish I could remember which one but I can't. It said that parents are often over-eager to move their kids out of cribs and that they really aren't emotionally or physically ready until between 2 and 3 years. The only time you should do it early is if they are climbing out on their own and getting in to unsafe situations.
So, unless this is the case, I would suggest putting them back in to their cribs for another 4-6 months ( or longer)and trying again.
Here's an article on Parenting.com I found on the subject:

You can ask your pediatrician as well.
Good Luck!

Hi H.,
Although I can't offer advice, I had the same thing happen. I had a lot of pressure from family to put my daughter in her own bed, I tried it about a month ago, she was 13 months....
It was a no-go :)
She's back in her crub sleeping great hahaha

Let me know if it works for you and HOW :) I look forward to her sleeping in her bed but it's obviously too early if people are saying 20 months is early, it's definately early for mine!!

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why did you move them to big boy beds? My 26 month old is still in the crib and sleeps well. Also, if you just moved, that plays a big part in not sleeping well - it is disruptive for a few weeks. It should pass within a month and they should sleep again. My suggestion: Put them back into their familiar cribs for a while.

Good luck!

Unless they are climbing out of the cribs, they are a little young for big boy beds. I agree with the other moms that they need to adjust to the move first before transitioning to big beds. Their crib is a major comfort zone for them, their safe place at night. The new beds are probably making them feel really insecure! Bring back the cribs!
