Getting Rid of Smell in Cloth Diapers

I started using cloth diapers a few months ago and I loved them until they started smelling. I use bunGenius, Mommy's Touch, and Happy Heinies pocket diapers. They smell awful even after washing. My wash routine is: cold wash cycle, hot wash cycle with detergent, and a warm wash cycle. I bleach them once a month at the manufacturer's recommendation. I've tried Dawn dish soap on them, I've added a water softener to my wash cycle, and I let them dry outside in the sun, and the still stink. I feel like I've done everything, and they still stink. The manufacturers are very strict with their warranty. They say not to use vinegar, baking soda, borax, bac-out, etc. If I do, I can't return them.

I'm just wondering if any cloth diaper users have any more ideas. Also, have any of you used vinegar or bac-out on bumGenius diapers? Did it damage them? I've already asked for help on several forums, and so far I haven't had any luck. I've also contacted the manufacturers and that hadn't helped either, so I'm worried that I'm just stuck. I don't want to cloth diaper if they are going to stink. Any help or advice??

What can I do next?

Is the smell on the pockets themselves or on the inserts? Have you tried boiling? What about oxy clean? What detergent are you using?

Help! My diapers stink! (smell like ammonia, icky..etc)
Diapers that smell can be caused by two different things. One is detergent build up and the other is ammonia bacteria. Using proper washing techniques should stop the smell. Please look here to see how to properly wash your diapers. In the meantime, If it's detergent buildup you'll need to wash your diapers in hot with no detergent until there are no more bubbles. This could be several washes. If it's ammonia bacteria you'll need to either boil your diapers and then let them cool so you don't stretch the elastic or add a capful of bleach to a hot wash with no detergent then wash like normal.

I have used both vinegar and baking soda on my Bumgenius diapers and they haven't been ruined yet! Some people suggest running the inserts through the dishwasher to help with the smell. I know it sounds gross, but you would do it after you already washed them. I guess the super hot water helps to strip the fabric of the detergent buildup. Boiling in a big pot is another alternative. I have also heard that adding a bit of tea tree oil to the wash can help. Good luck!!

I have also had this problem in the past with both covers and CPFs (fuzzi bunz, proraps, bummis). I was able to remedy it by washing twice: Hottest cycle on washer and turned up the water heater, Prewash, and extra rinse all WITHOUT any detergent and once with just a little bit of vinegar. This got rid of any problem I was having. Typically the smell is from detergent build up. I use Charlies Soap and now only use about 1/4 of a tbsp of detergent when washing my diapers and have not had the problem again. A previous poster commented about boiling them, this is another great option if you don't want to turn your water temperature up.
