To all you wise mommies out there-
My husband and I want to try for baby #2 and we feel we are as ready as we'll ever be-plus I am 38...tick tock. I got pregnant VERY easily with #1 who is now 13 months. I breast fed and am in the process of weaning-down to 2 nursing sessions (am and pm). I still don't have my period!!!!!!!!!!!!! Am I even ovulating? Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice?
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I don't think there's a definite answer here. Sorry. I can tell you how it was with me:
I nursed my first until he was 11 months old, and got pregnant the following month with my 2nd. I was 33.
I got pregnant with the 3rd only 2 months after stopping nursing the 2nd. I was 34.
With the 3rd, I got my period the day I stopped nursing completely (13 months after she was born).
With the first 2, my period returned sooner - I think I was doing what you're doing (twice a day).
Good luck!

Hi Getting pregnant with#2,
I recently gave birth to baby #2, my oldest daughter was 22 months old. I am a 33 year old full time criminal justice major with a minor in social work. I am writting my response to you because I had a surprise pregnancy with my second. I was like you and nursing my first daughter, she was 9 months old and my period was off and on. I was told by my ob that YES! you are still ovulating and can get pregnant very easily after your first. I didn't pay too much attention to it since I had problems concieving my first child. Surprise to us I was pregnant with #2 when my daughter was 9months.
Oh its a blessing yes, but extremly hard with 2 infants. BE PREPARED!!!! I tell friends to wait until the first is at least 4 or 5 so they are sure the oldest is independent. In your case as well as mine the clock is ticking and I understand your rush, do so with caution is my advice. My husband and I wish you the best of luck!!!

I got pregnant with #2 when #1 was 10 months. I was still nursing regularly and hadn't gotten a period yet, which means we conceived the first time I had ovulated in over 19 months. I continued to nurse until he was 13 months and then my body couldn't handle feeding 3 anymore. So, yes you could ovulate before you get your period if you watch for the signs but then you should either be pregnant or getting a period after that. If you think you might be, get the ovulation tests and check!

With my second, I nursed until she was 16 months and didn't get a period back until she was 13 months. It has been somewhat irregular and I don't think I am ovulating every cycle. We are trying for #3 so good luck to us both!

Ummmmmm the answer is YES can you still get pregnant even if you don't have a period. I thought it wasn't possible.

I didn't have a period for over two years when I got pregnant with my second, and only once in three years with my third. I have a 28 month old, 15 month old and I'm due in a week. I'm exhausted! :-)

Good luck w/ #2. Good vibes!!!!

My baby self weaned at 13 months. At that time we were down to 1 feeding a day and thats when my period started again. Two months later, we were pregnant. Unfortunately, that pregnancy ended very early in misscarriage, but the one positive thing that came out of it was that I was fertile and we could get pregnant on our own. (first one required fertility treatments). I wish you lots of luck!!

Hello E. - I just started my period about 3 months ago and it was right after I weaned my baby from nursing. Yes - I do believe you can ovulate and still not have a period but it obviously gets tricky tracking cycles without your period to have a gauge. You'll need to monitor your temperature and cervical fluid changes. My OB gave me something (I can't recall the name) to make me have my period so this could be an option for you too. You can ovulate at any point - a woman releases an egg 12-16 days before her expected period so it can happen before your period comes on. Good luck to you! My husband and I are in pretty much the exact same boat and are planning for #2 as well.

After my son was born, I didn't get my period back until he was 17 months old. I was breastfeeding too--got pregnant with #2 a few cycles later when he was 20 months old, and continued to breastfeed til his second birthday--at that point, he weaned himsel--I think my milk production had gone so low and there wasn't much left for him. Then, after my daughter, I didn't get my period back til she was 14 months old, a little earlier. She's still nursing for now, at 17 months old--thinking of trying for baby #3 soon. Good luck to you!

I was in the same boat. Got pregnant with the 1st very easily. I nursed her until 8 months (but was probably down to 2 feedings per day by the time she was 6 months old) when low and behold I got pregnant. I think I may have had a very scant period at that point but, like I said was still nursing, and got pregnant the very first try. So don't go by the presence or absence of a period and by the fact that you are nursing.

I nursed until 14.5 months, without birth control. 2 weeks after weaning I got my first period, and got pregnant RIGHT away.

That being said, you could be ovulating. But the odds will be better when you wean completely.

Dear E., My best wishes to you and your hubby. I can only tell you my story. I breastfed my first son and at 4 months when he started teething and biting me I started to supplement. I had not had a period and became pregnant before ever seeing one again. My first 2 sons are 13 months apart. We are all different but yes it is possible you are ovulating. Grandma Mary
