Getting Pregnant While Breastfeeding - Southbury,CT

I currently take Fenugreek to keep my milk supply up to breastfeed my 5month old. (this was determined to be necessary after visiting with a lactation consultant) My husband and I are looking to conceive again, and Fenugreek is listed as not recomended for use during pregnancy. I have heard that Blessed Thistle may be used, however I just saw that it isn't recomended for use during pregnancy. All that leaves is Alfalfa and Nettles, which are recomended for use during the pregnancy. I was just curious if anyone has used them, and if you know of any other alternitives to keep my supply up, especially being that my milk supply should naturally drop in my second trimester... Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

As I have seen a lot of conflicting information on the internet, I will ask my doctor for further advice on the subject. Thank you for the responses!

hi janell, i would definitely ask my doc about taking anything, but personally, i wouldnt take anything herbal while pregnant, i dont even drink most herbal teas, nobody regulates the stuff. even if the herb itself is safe, its hard to say what other things might have found their way in there.
if you want to boost your supply, you can try oatmeal with fake maple syrup (cheap-log cabin, etc) in it. the oatmeal (real oatmeal, not the instant, loaded with other stuff kind) boosts your supply, and the syrup does, too, as it has fenugreek in it, but food is monitored so its ok - (though i didnt know anything about it not being safe during pregnancy, i would think the amount in syrup is ok since its not on that list of stuff we cant eat during preg, but i know that now i will ask my doc about it to be sure.) the oatmeal + syrup worked for me when i was trying to boost my supply, made a noticable difference after just a few days, along with drinking a lot more water, and of course, no caffiene or any meds that would dehydrate you. my gyn also recommended beer, specifically black beer, though i dont know if they make it non-alcoholic, i never tried it myself.
im sure you know this, but the best way to boost your supply is to increase the frequency with which you nurse (or pump, though putting the baby at the breast is much more effective).....
also, i dont know if you have gotten your period back yet or not, but if not, then boosting your supply is more likely to keep you from getting it back, though certainly no guarantees, everyone and every preg is diffferent. best of luck to you, and remember that being pregnant while nursing places a big demand on your body, so treat yourself well, eat and drink and sleep really good. take care, D.

Hi,

I take 100% Pure vegetarian capsules called Easy Flow (Mother's Milk) from the company called Smiling Herbs. I am not trying to conceive, but they work really well and you may want to ask your OB about them. Good luck!

J.,

It is difficult to be certain that any of these supplements are safe during pregnancy because they are not monitored or tested by the FDA, either for safety or effectiveness.

My advice would be to go to your OB, get checked out before you start trying (anyone should do this) and ask them. As your baby gets older and starts to eat solids, your supply is going to drop anyway, which combined with being pregnant will make it harder to keep your supply up.

Incidentally, please keep in mind that you may or may not be able to get pregnant while you are nursing. I know it is no guarantee of anything, but my period din't return until a month after my son weaned at 11 months.

Good luck!

J.

My midwife suggested that I drink a non-alcholic beer a day. The barley (I think it's barley) will help to increase your milk supply.
