Getting Iron/rust Out of Clothes?

My mother washed the kids bathing suits at her lake house. Now there are smears of a reddish brown "stained" into the fabric - uggh.

My mom insists "Iron Out" would work. Well it did, on one item, but it also bleached out the color too.

I'm so annoyed. Any of you mamas experience this? Any solutions?

What can I do next?

I recently had to get iron out of two of my nephew's shirts. One was from a year ago and had been washed and dried. Most came out w/ some prespot and sol-u-mel. The tougher spots I sprayed with Tub & Tile and it worked. These are all Melaleuca products so they are safe to mix and are non-toxic.

I use a great product called Rust Stain Remover by Whink. You must wash immediately after applying it. I have used it for years and have never had a problem. My Walmart quit carrying it and I finally found it at a grocery store with the laundry stuff. It is in a brown bottle.

I had this happen when we vacationed in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Orange everything. I had the same experience with Iron Out. I was told by a local grandma to use a watersoftener product in the wash (Calgon). It helped, but didn't get all the rust stain out. I think it would have worked had I used it initially instead of washing them and drying them and then trying to remove the stain. I turned our 'orange' clothes into camping/yard work clothes as I was never really able to completely get the rust out.
