Getting Around in NY

My husband and I are going to NY next week with our one year old. I am wondering how we are going to get around. Do we have to bring his car seat with us and then carry it around all day if we want to take a taxi. I know the subway is an option but taxis sometimes are easier. I am taking the car seat that can also be a stroller but I don't think he will want to sit in that all day. He also likes to be in his baby carrier but only for a limited amount of time. Please help if you have any ideas. Thanks

What can I do next?

Hello Carrie,
You will love NYC, so much fun. Bring the lightest and easiest, and smallest stroller along. Streets are super busy, boutiques and restaurants doors are very narrow to get in. Room inside the restaurants etc. will not fit the standard stroller. If you happen to jump on the subway or take a taxi, the lighter and folded stroller the better. There are lots of stairs and the connected subways require lots of walking. Taxis trunks are not the big, so keep the stroller size in mind. You guys will do lots of walking, don't worry about your baby loosing interest sitting down. NYC streets are extremelly entertaining, your baby will have fun looking around. You might need to take a subway or a taxi on the rainy day. I would recommend on buying unlimited metro cards for you and your husband. Subways are much faster than taxis (so expensive and the traffic is always bad) On the subway please avoid rush hours, it's not worth the frustration. Subway will only take minutes on the express train from uptown to downtown. Walking around alwasy walk on your right side to avoid crowds and people bumping to you. Comfortable stops to change and feed your baby; Henry Bendel 5th ave and 59th, Saks Fifth on 5th Ave and 49th street, Babies Rus on 34th/Broadway. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Have a great trip, you will love it.

NYC is the best!! We went when my daughter was about 17mths and my niece was just turning 1 yr. We took a car seat and a stroller and it was a major pain to lug around. My sister in law just had a stroller - they held my niece in thier lap during taxi rides. I was not OK with that even though there is no car seat law in the city. I was more concerned with her safey than my convenience. My daugheter has ridden subways in the car seat, the stroller and in my lap. I'd recommend you take everything and then you have it in the hotle room if you want it or if you dont. I always overpack!! Best of luck!

Hi Carrie,

A sling is minimal weight and would be one more option for your baby's transport. I'd try to rotate him from carseat to stroller to you to Dad, etc, as your son lets you know he's done with whichever one. Have fun and best of luck!

Carrie,

I was looking at carseats online at Target the other day and saw a "portable" carseat. It folds up and fits in the diaper bag and then easily fits in a seat. It is not recomended for permanent use but is ment for cases just like yours. I believe it was about $35 or so, not quite that much of an extra expense. In my opinion exactly what you need. Good luck.

I lived there for almost 2 decafes. Just put the infant on your lap when you are taking taxis or buses and subways. You won't need to be carrying a car seat all over NY. That is tiresome.
