Hello everyone and happy holidays!-Yesterday I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I have an appointment tomorrow with a dietitian but was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for cook books that might help. And any exercises that might work indoors. I live in a snowy climate and taking walks outside is not a fun proposition for me. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello everyone! I just got back from the dietitian and she talked very fast to get through all the information she was giving me. But with a little planing and prep work I know I will be able to control things. Thanks to all of you who have responded. It makes me feel good to know that there are others out there that have gone through the same situation as me! Have a super Christmas-as will I--in moderation!!!!

I have a friend who had Gestational diabetes, I will ask her. My son who is 5 years old has had Type 1 diabetes for 2 years now. We are not experts but if you have any questions I will do my best to help. As for the cook books, I find a lot of recipes online. As for exercise, just going up and down the stairs an extra time or two then three then four. That always helped me feel a bit better. Good Luck

Hi L.! My only tip for you is to stay away from using high fructose corn syrup. It's nasty for anyones body but is particularly harmful for anyone with diabetes or pre diabetes.
As for exercises, I loved prenatal yoga! You can get DVD's or tapes almost anywhere. Blessings!

If I remember correctly, you don't need a special recipe or cook book- Focus your meals around protien. Limit your carbs, bread, potatoes, rice and all the good Christmas stuff hanging around. Don't cut them out- but cut them down. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Hi L.,
I had GD with my last pregnancy. I didn't know anything about it before being diagnosed so I thought it had to do with eating too much sugar & was surprised to find out it really had to do with carbs. You'll probably be given a glucose meter when you meet with the nutritionist & mine has a website to help you understand. There's also the American Diabetes Association website (www.diabetes.org) that has recipes.
As for exercise, it's boring but you can always march in place while watching TV or listening to music.
I wish you the best with your pregnancy & GD!

Indoor exercises: workout videos, going up and down your stair, jumping rope, treadmill or elliptical machine, strength training, or hire an at home personal trainer to come and show you a workout program.

I was borderline gestational diabetic with my last pregnancy, and when you see the nutritionist it will all be very common sense ( they treated me asif it was full diabetes cause I had a really odd pregnancy, any test I took came back positive) anyways just eat a well rounded meal, veggies, protien(which can be found in soy sources and beans not just meat, there are some good ones out thier). Stay away from fried foods, sweets, I am sure you know the drill, we all do we just don't always live by them, exersice.....if you have stairs in your place you could walk up and down those, stand in place and walk lifting your legs high off the ground, think back to your younger years of school exersises and apply those in the home. Hope I was a little help good luck and congrats on the new baby.

Hi L., I know what your going through I was diagnosed with gestational diabeties with my second child and it was near the holidays. I was so bumbed because I love all the holiday goodies but I found some really great recipes online for low-carb-low sugar pumpkin pies and cakes. My husband was real good to me also, he ate what I ate and stuffed my stocking with lots of sugar-free candies. I belonged to a gym so on my lunch break from work I went and swam, you might try locating your local YMCA or rec center to see if you can come in for swimming or any aerobic stuff. I also got excercizes from magazines and online. There is alot you can do with a mat and chair and a rubber ball. Hope this helps my dietician was great and as long as a stayed on the diet they gave me I didn't have to take any meds.

I have found YOGA to be a great help throughout pregnancy and now surviving cancer. I also live in the cold climate and really look forward to my twice weekly classes. They lift my spirits and really help stretch, build balance, flexibility and actually is proven to improve our immune systems! Give it a go!

Hi L.!
Sorry about your GD diagnosis. As someone else said, once you have talked with your dietitian, it will hopefully all make a lot more sense. I am a Type 1 diabetic (insulin dependent) so I know a little about having to follow a meal plan, etc. Reading nutrition labels and watching your carbohydrate intake is going to help you manage your condition.

I don't know about a cookbook, but I would suggest you check out "CalorieKing Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter" by Allan Borushek. It has a lot of great information in it that would be useful for you, like carb info on a variety of foods, as well as menu items from lots of restaurants which will make it easier for you to determine which foods would be ok for you to eat when you eat out, etc.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Good luck!

Nicole

I know it seems overwhelming when you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, but I promise it gets to be second nature after a few weeks. I had it with both of my daughters and my dr said to expect to have it with every pregnancy now. She doesn't understand why I get it, but I do. I got a great cook book from the dietitian, so maybe you will too. They key for me was learning how many carbs were in foods and balancing them out throughout the day. I learned to eat many small meals throughout the day in order to still get enough fruits and other foods. That also helped me keep from getting really hungry and wanting to eat a huge meal. Nothing is more frustrating when you are pregnant than still feeling hungry and being out of carb points. One can only eat so many veggies! Also eat proteins with your carbs. That helps you feel full longer. Everyone's diet is different, but this is what I was told I could eat:
30 carbs for breakfast (2 pieces toast with peanut butter and a glass of crystal lite orange drink)
30 carbs for snack 2 hours later (piece of fruit)
60 carbs for lunch (sandwich, small bag chips, carb freedom yougurt, veggies)
30 carb snack (milk or cheese product or 20 teddy grahams, few of each, etc.)
60 carb dinner (many possibilities, but the more protein and veggies you have the better)
I love sweets, breads, fruit-all with lots of carbs. When craving fruits I learned to eat sugar free jello or Blue Bunny Carb Freedom yougurt or ice cream. There were many times I would save carbs from supper so I could eat the 1/2 cup of ice cream right from the measuring cup! It was worth it! When craving crunchy foods I would have some teddy grahams with my daughter. Just count them out bc it is too easy to have just a few more out of the bag. It seems like a lot of work, but it is worth it to have a healthy baby! I had two 6 1/2 pound babies and have enjoyed my foods I really love after they were born! Good luck!

I am so sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I don't know of any cookbooks for this particular problem but you could try to google it. I have an exercise video that I love, it is called "Walk Away the Pounds." It is great for strenghening legs, abdomen and arm. My kids are 3 and 6 and love doing it with me.

Good luck and Merry Christmas,

A.

You don't really need to do cook books and what not. Just watch your carb portions, and keep the sugar away :-)

I walked the mall around and around and around LOL.
