Gerber Puffs

My Daughter is 7 1/2 months old- I tried to give her the puffs a few weeks ago, the first time I did it she gagged and acted like she was choking. I waited another week and gave her a little pieces of one and it was almost the same reaction!! I tried again the other night and she gagged a little bit, but didn't do the coughing/choking thing this time. Has anyone else had this happen with their kids??? I'm wondering if its normal or if I should just keep trying to give them to her and eventually she will get used to it??

What can I do next?

Keep trying and offering them but don't force them. She'll eventually be okay with eating them. She's also practicing her pincer grasp, too.

it might just be the strangeness of the texture-it's not slippery and smooth like what she is used to. They dissolve pretty fast so I wouldn't worry to much and just give them one at a time for a bit.

Our daughter started them at 6 months or so and the same thing happened the first few times - she got used to them pretty quick and then there was no stopping her. She's not choking, it's just a new sensation. I don't agree with others who say to stop giving them to her - you have to keep trying things. That being said Cheerios are good too (and have a bit less sugar).

Enjoy watching her figure out new stuff! She will get the hang of it quickly and it will be on to the next thing.

I think because they dissolve so fast that they almost coat their little throats. I started with cheerios and she mastered those no problem at about 8 months. The puffs say to wait till 12 months but she started eating them without any problems at about 10 months. I think cheerios help because they tongue them before trying to swallow them because they are hard.
Good Luck

At this age, pureed foods are what most babies eat. Snack puffs aren't needed. I'd stick with meals only, and "real" foods - warm cereal, pureed veggies and fruits, pureed meats when you feel ready. There's no nutritional need for these "puffs" so I'd eliminate them and stick with purees.

She's probably not ready for them yet. Wait another month or two. Whatever happened to cherios?

I agree with Betsy, some kids have texture issues, mine hated all smochy textures like banana, pudding, etc.
Not only to eat but to touch, she doesn't like get her hands dirty or touch stuff other kids probably love.
I will let it go for a couple months and give her other stuff.

My son is 8 months old and we have been doing puffs since he was about 6 1/2 months old. We never had that problem with pufffs, but when he is full he will gag on his baby food.

Sometimes kids have texture issues. I would stop with the puffs for now and try something different.

I usually don't introduce chewable foods to babies until they are about 101/2 to 11 months old. They really don't need to "chew" the puffs but their little throats are more ready for the feeling of rougher foods.

Sounds normal to me. My DD is the same age and I just started her on puffs a week ago. Same reaction, although she's got the hang of it now.

The new texture/solid (actually solid) food takes a little getting used to, just like regular baby food.

Just watch her closely and be ready to fish it out of her mouth if need be. (But those things almost liquify the instant they're in there).
Don't worry, it's normal. Keep trying with her, she'll get it.
