GeoTrax - What Age Do They Really like Them?

We got my 5 year old son a GeoTrax set for Christmas when he was 3. I realize now he was a little too young for it as it's been in the closet for two years. We tried to get it out a couple months ago, he was all excited, then quickly got frustrated trying to put it together (I did too) and lost interest. I'm thinking of selling the whole mess, but don't want to if he's just too young and there's a chance he'll really enjoy it in the future.

So - those of you with kiddos with GeoTrax, at what age did your kids really start to like them and play with them? How much do they play with them? How big a space do you really need to set one up? They seem to be able to take over the entire room, and we don't have that much space unless it's something he'll be playing with constantly.

Thanks for your help!

So What Happened?

Well, it looks like it's just not his thing and he probably won't get more interested as he gets older. We've tried playing with it with him, and we end up playing by ourselves because he's off playing basketball. It was an expensive lesson learned, but at least now we know not to get him a model train set for Christmas!
Thanks for the responses!

I just may not be his thing. When we had only one or two sets, it seemed that we were always one piece short to connect the track. We got a few more sets, and it's worked out great!

We actually found that this set is easier than most other train sets. The wooden sets seem to come apart easily, and the other plastic ones seem harder to put together (the kids here may just be too young for those). They usually are able to set it up, sometimes with a little help, and we put the pieces in tupperware containers when they are done. The kids here love it, even the girls.

We got them for our son on his 3rd birthday this year, & he loves them. When my husband comes every, they play with it every night for almost an hour. It takes up most of our room, but we make different combos every once in awhile while adding some things & not others. The other pieces that we're not using are in a box in the closet until we want to reconfigure again.

Ours is set up all the time, so he can play with it any time. It's a pain to set it all, so you have to leave it to get the most enjoyment out of it. It's not the age...it's how you teach them to play with it.

We got my daughter a small set with she was about to be 2 (for Christmas). She played with it then and she is still playing with it now at 3 1/2. We've got just enough to make a small train track & it is perfect to just get it out when she wants it and easily put it up later. She is able to put the tracks together herself, but it's probably because she really likes it & is too young to worry if it's right or not. I hope this helps with the age qustion, but like I said we just have a little set that is easy to get out & cleans-up quickly.

We got our son some when he was 3, and he still loves playing with them. (He's 4 now.) They have the sets that allow you to build different levels now; so, that is a little challenging for him, but it's great fun for him and my husband- and even me :)- to play together. Whenever other kids come over, that's all they want to play with. lol

True, it may not be his thing. We got a set for Max when he was 2. He literally plays with it EVERY day. He is 5 going on 6 in December. He has probably more than half the sets and asks for more each holiday. It takes up the entire floor of his room and we have tears when we take it down once a month to vacuum! I think the big thing is that my husband builds elaborate systems with him most evenings. I can barely make a track connect so I don't bother trying. But my husband, for 2 years, built all the tracks and just explained to Max what he was doing and had Max help. Now, Max can build 3 level tracks with three separate routes. (He has three currently working sets of trains.) It is amazing. He loves it.

My daughter loves it too and she is just three also. You can always try it out with her before you give it away!

Good luck!

I think you are right I don't think it his thing. We also bought our son his first geotrax when he was three and he plays with it all the time. Every birthday and Christmas we buy something little for the geotrax so it has grown over the years. He is now 4 and will be 5 in a week and still plays with it.

My step-son loves his geo track. He played with it constantly when we had it set up (but yes, it took up his whole room). He started at age 5 but was already obsessed with trains because his Dad always took him the train park (this was when we lived in phoenix). Before we moved to TX I gave the set to my daycare lady and the kids there loved it too (even the girls). I left the set up to Dad--not my forte. Once they get the hang of it (and it is set up for them) I think that hours of fun are ahead. All kids are different though. Good luck!

Hi A.,
My son is 3 and 1/2 and loves to play with his set- it does seem to take alot of space(how much depends on the size of the set-ours occupies about a 5x5 area) and we change batteries frequently. He got it for Christmas and is still playing with it. But he loves his trains and I enjoy watching him play. Our set was not difficult to put together though. Good luck!
