Geico or Standard Insurance

Hello...

We have been with Allstate Insurance for 10 years and we pay a lot for our insurance. In a cost cutting effort I started to research insurance quotes and I have found that Standard will save us $400 and Geico will save us $529 for the exact same policy that we have with Allstate. Praise God, we have been accident free for 10 years but just incase something happens... I have heard that Geico will drop a customer for a minor fender bender, etc. Has anyone had good/bad experience with either of the companies. What would you recommend?

What can I do next?

My sister had three fender benders within a few months while a Geico customer (fortunately she is better driver now :) ). She was found at fault in one, 50/50 in the other and not at fault in the third. They didn't drop her or raise her rates and at the time she was only a customer for a little over a year. My parents have been with Geico for over 20 years and stay with them because they have been so pleased with the service they have gotten. My husband and I were with them for several years too and were very happy, we only changed because they didn't offer some coverage the hubby needed for work. Good luck!

If my memory serves me correct, we had Geico in the past and had an accident where they totalled our car and I think my rates went up considerably. We have had Standard Insurance for a few years now and LOVE them. Our rates decrease every year and by being accident free, our deductible goes down $100 every year. Just be sure you are comparing apples to apples to see if your savings are significant enough and worth it. Also, Standard gives great discounts on homeowners insurance with an auto policy...just a thought.
Good luck in what you decide :)

Hi L., we just switched this week from Allstate to Standard, both home and auto. They will be saving us quite a bit of money, too, so we will see!

We switched to GEICO 2 years ago and have not had any issues. I was in the same situation as you, we switched from State Farm who I had forever and when I switched I saved SOOOO much money it was crazy! I never thought that there would be that much of a difference. I even found out that my home was underinsured by quite a bit, I was able to up my coverage and still save a crazy amount of money.

We like GEICO but we have not had any claims (knock on wood) so I have not had to deal with their process yet.

Good luck!

Hi! I'm an independent insurance agent in AZ. Like the person said below, find an independent agent in your area that can shop around for you. They can probably even find another company that can save you even more. And unless you really understand insurance, it's best to have an agent that you can trust (Geico is an 800# and they don't know YOU personally) that can explain what each coverage is so you are comfortable with what you have. I have several clients who had Geico and didn't realize they were missing coverages such as medical expense and I caught it when I quoted them. So make sure you are comparing apples to apples (exactly the same) to make sure you are getting a correct quote, especially if you are price shopping. And if you go thru an independent agent, we already have your info so if you want to shop it again down the line, we already KNOW you and have everything! I tell people all the time to shop their insurance, its a great way to save money in this economy. Congrats and good luck!

We have been with Geico forever and love them. When I had a wreck several years ago they were wonderful and very helpful. Hope that helps.

L.,
Before you make up your mind, would you like to talk to another agent? We switched several years ago to doing business with the Gordon Lund Agency in Richardson. Our agent is Mike Walker and his number is ###-###-####.
He checks many insurance companies to find us the best deal. You also get a discount if you insure home and car together.
Hope this is helpful.

The good news is that there are so many insurance companies now that price competition helps the consumer. The bad news is that you just don't know how the company will handle a claim until it happens. I have heard that with insurance you get what you pay for. We have Allstate and I do think they tend to be on the high side for Auto, but they are on the low for Home - so it balances out for us.

Hello L.,
I don't have either insurance nor do I have experience with either but I switched insurance companies last year. I switched to Wawanesa. Have you heard of them? Well, thank goodness and knock on wood, but I haven't made a claim but my b/f and family has this company and even have been in accidents and has no problems with them. Their rates are really low. So low that my previous company, Mercury, couldn't compare and said to go for it. Just to throw out another option. I'm not positive as to where they cover. Good Luck on finding something you cheaper.
