GD Diagnosis

I heard from my doctor today, and I have gestational diabetes. I am so frustrated. I had a 132 on my first glucose test, so they sent me for the three-hour test. I guess two of my four numbers were high, but the second number was just barely over the cutoff.

I'm not measuring large, I'm 31 weeks and have gained 15 pounds, I started at a healthy weight, I exercise regularly, and I'm a pretty healthy eater.

I'm feeling so stressed and really bummed out about this. Anyone else had a similar experience?

What can I do next?

Yup, sounds pretty much just like my pregnancy. I had to test my blood sugar 3x/day and watch what I ate, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It's frustrating, but as long as you follow your doctor's instructions, you'll be okay. Ask for a referral to a nutritionalist so they can help you come up with a plan for meals and snacks that will work for you and be healthy for your baby.

As a side note, my daughter was born 7lbs, 5oz and on time and is the picture of health! You'll be okay!!! :)

I had the same thing happen to me with my first pregnancy. I was barely above the cutoff as well. I was really discouraged at first, but felt a lot better after I saw a dietician/nutritionist. She set up a simple plan for me. It involved eating at regular intervals with specified types of food. I had to adjust my eating, and sometimes have a snack at inopportune times, but people around me were supportive. It took a little bit of getting used to, but it ended up being pretty easy to stick to the diet. The only unpleasant part was having extra blood tests. I was able to keep my diabetes under control with diet. Based on the info you gave, I'm guessing you will be able to do the same thing.

My son was very small when he was born and I didn't gain much weight either. I think we both ended up healthier for the experience.

Good luck!

I had the same experience. I controlled the GD with diet. I did have to test my blood sugar which was a pain, but I knew that the diet was working. Also, the doctor was a bit worried about the size of the baby, but due to sticking mostly to the diet the baby was only 6 lb 8 oz, not at all big. I was even able to "cheat" on my diet when I wanted to by eating protein with the carbohydrates to keep the sugar level down in my blood. I had also heard that once you have GD you will have it with all following pregnancies, not true. My second pregnancy I didn't show any trace of it, even taking the test without having eaten at all. Talking to the dietician really helped my worries as she informed me that it is carbs, not just sugars that cause hight blood sugar. So even though I thought I was eating healthy, I did need to change to more proteins and produce to balance out the sugars.

I had it and it really isn't that bad! It was better for me to watch what I was eating anyway! Just do what your doctor says and be glad it isn't something really bad! My baby wasn't too big either. 7 lb 11 oz... Relax, it will be ok!

First of all (((hugs))) Gestational diabetes insnt the end of the world I was also barely over the numbers when I was pregnant with my second child and had to follow a pretty strict diet and testing schedule. It was hard at first but became a way of life. I controlled my GD with diet and did not have to take 1 drop of insulin. I made a decision for my baby to follow the rules. I did really well actually lost weight in my pregnancy and had a healthy 6lbs 12oz baby girl in the end. If you need any tips on how to manage your GD send me a PM and I will help in any way I can. I was a researcher when it came to pregnancy things I just felt I needed to be super informed.

Good luck and remember its a sacrifice that you are willing to make for you and your babies health.
